Army Barracks

Postby William » Wed Dec 22, 2004 8:59 pm

Hi all this is my first post. I am looking for some information if possible. I Live not to far away from Linn Park in the Southside of Glasgow and Have often wandred up towards a little plae called Holmbyre. From Holmbyre there is a little lane that runs along for some way to by an old Graveyard that has been mentioned on this posty before. However someway by this gravyard at the very end of the field there are some old disused concrete barrack type things. They seem pretty old and were probably used as Air raid shelters or something similar. Can anybody help me out with some information please?

Cheers

William

Hii William, I know exactly the place you mean. I havent been up there for years now, though when I was young I heard that this place was some sort of Army Barracks during the war. Local rumours suggested there was also anti-aircraft guns stationed there, indeed on the link I have provided below, someone seems to confirm this.

The place is known as Carnbooth Anti Aircraft site from WW2. It wasn't an army barracks though.

If anyone here's at Glasgow Uni, there's an absolutely fascinating book on WW11 AA site designs-it would probably tell you quite a lot about the layout of this site.
On the general topic of barracks, does anyone have piccies of Maryhill barracks, particularly when it was the HLI's depot?
Oh, as you've probably guessed, I'm new here so a big hullo to everybody!

Here's a wee article i came across when i was doing some research on the Air Raid's over Glasgow, not quite Air Raid's but interesting all the same.

From the Scotsman 29th May 1934 :

GLASGOW BOMB OUTRAGE
--------------------------------
Inquiry Held at Maryhill Barracks

No arrest has yet been made in connection with the mysterious explosion which occurred on Saturday night at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow. A court of inquiry was into the affair was held at the barracks yesterday.

While the police are very reticent about the incident it is known that a bomb of some kind exploded, and detectives are acting on the theory that the perpetrator of the outrage was the same person who was responsible for the recent bomb explosion at the Army Recruiting Offices, 139 Bath Street, a fortnight ago.
