Sorry to break this to you guys but it looks like demolition is on the cards. Report in the Herald this weekend that Glasgow City Council's Building control officers have been inside and have declared it unstable. Consequently GCC will serve a 'repair or demolish' notice on the owners. GCC, Historic Scotland, and the owners are insisting that they will do all they can to save the building but I suspect that could just be wringing hands.

Demolition work started this evening on the back part of the building, which adjoins the tenements on Bath Street. Apparently some of the residents have been evacuated too. It looks like the whole lot's going to be coming down too, even the facade.
There seems to be something a little iffy about work starting this late on Christmas Eve, though - triple time for the Dem-Master, I suppose.

My sister, who lives just next door, says that when she left the flat today, there were some people from the demolition company in a rather heated discussion with some official looking people (possibly fire investigation officers), and it seems that work's stopped for now. They've done a fair bit of work at the rear of the building, but the front remains standing.

The bastards! That front facade is as solid as a bloody great stone thing made of big stones! They can't seriously claim that part of the facade at least couldn't be propped up and saved if they wanted to.

110% in agreement, I'm no expert but there is no way that the entrance portico and columns are unstable - the fact the work is being done between Xmas and New Year is fishy too!
I'm sure it has nothing at all to do with the value of the prime piece of city centre real estate that the building currently inhabits, at least for the next 24 hours....
Who is accountable for this shit? Who can I go to to seek evidence that total demolition is strictly necessary on purely safety grounds??
