Hi all.

I think I remember a story a while back regarding a railway / tram terminal on mitchell street, does anybody have any info on this or did I just imagine it in a drunken stupor? Is there any relevance to the tunnel nightclub being called the tunnel (very close to the endo of bothwell street and also queen st / buchanan street!)

Any info would be good,even if to tell me it's a load of rubbish.

the tunnel nightclub was named after the one in New York. Before this it was a very large snooker hall. I worked for the guys that purchased it and then converted it in to a night club.(early 90's i think). I remember going in when it was a snooker club, it looked massive. In the celler there is a room for the spirits. The shelves were over 6 foot long and about 2.5 feet wide i think and there might have been 4. All solid mahogany. I remember this 'cause the chippy working in the renovation wanted the timber(mega expensive mahog is). He was going to put up cheep pine ones.(thats one for all you DIY'ers out there)

I've not been in for years but there is a fire exit at the back of the office were the small bar used to be(layout might have change)
Do you know where the fire exit from there comes out at?

dont know about trams though...not that old

Mitchell Street and - immediately to the north - West Nile Street were the main route through the city for horses and carts, in the early years of the 20th century. The corporation had extra horses stationed at the foot of Mitchell Street to help pull heavy loads up the hill. So I suppose it was a station of sorts, but for cuddies rather than trams.

Because of the hills, the corpy was keen to use the Mitchell Street - Springburn service to pioneer the new electric trams.
The horses were so overworked on these hilly routes, that well-to-do ladies, distressed at the condition of the poor horses, would often let the tram pass by than travel on them.

Tunnel used to be called Tin Pan Alley during the 80s did it not ?

Tin pan alley was over the other side of the road and down towards Argyll Street.
