Here's a blast from the past. Anyone remember the the record department in Lewis's basement?

P.S. I worked in HMV in Union Street, from '86 - '95.

Not John Lewis, if that's what you mean. I meant Lewis's which was just ONE huge department store in what is now the Debenhams building. It did indeed have a record department in the basement. The whole ground floor of the building (TopMan, HMV, Virgin, The Gap Etc) was a huge food hall.

Ahh, the good old days.......

Do you mean security Jim with the 'tache? And who could forget Malky White? Wonder where they are now....

Your beer apprenticeship? What age are you? I was pished long before I met them. I have however SUNG at karaoke night in the Horseshoe on a night out with Malky White......

The horseshoe bar was pub of choice on a Thursday night (when we were still weekly paid), we did however 'graduate' to 'O Henry's' across the lane. A considerable amount of our weekly wage was spent as soon as we got it......

I think I actually still have some VHS footage of Malky and Jim baring their arses up on the roof above Union Street....

Am I going insane?, please tell me that Lewis's existed...

P.S. What is your real name, I may even know you!

Lewis's record shop

Postby johnnyanglia » Sun Nov 14, 2004 9:54 am

Are you refering to the building that GAP are based in ?. If so it used to be Arnott Simpson's and it did have to use the contemporary term a "record bar". I remember it vaguely as a child in the early 70's. My dad worked there as a Saturday boy in the mid 60's and regularly bought records from it.

Another to add - Ital Riddims.

Specialist Reggae record shop, was wore or less on the corner of Sauchihall and Buchanan.

Obviously this was pre-Buchanan galleries etc when the building was a run down carbuncle, rather than the retail ground zero it is today.
*value of posts can go down as well as up.
