There was JayKay, I used to spend my pocket money there every Friday when I was at school - those were the days, French imports of Blondie singles, double groove 10" singles *sigh* :)

Invy

Can you tell me where on Shettleston Road the shop was.

I use to go in to a record shop on the way home from work but I can't remember the name but it was between Killin Street and the Co-op I think.

I bought my first LP in there and got a few through ordering. I got a display for the Beatles Hollywood Bowl album when they were throwing it out.

Alex, I'm not sure if that was a different shop - Tom Russells was between the Co-Op and South Chester Street, probably a few doors along from the Co-Op. I'll ask my dad and brother if they remember anything more of it.

That could be the one then. I may have my location wrong and now that you mention it I think it was after the Co-op.

I will need to take a walk along one day and see if I can remember the exact location. It is strange how your perspective changes through the years.

I was there last week and it didn't occur to me to have a look to see if I could recognise the shop.

If it's any help, looking from the pavement, it had two wide plate glass windows with the door on the right hand side. There were a couple of rows of album racks and the counter ran parallel with the pavement along the back of the shop.

I'm not sure when it finally closed but it was still open in 1983 as I bought The Thompson Twins 'Quick Step and Side Kick" and Heaven 17s "The Luxury Gap" there. Or maybe I shouldn't really admit that :)

Thanks Invy

I will try and nip along tomorrow and take a photo of the shops so that we can identify which one it was.

The first LP i bought was Pilot. I ordered Ringo Starr's "Sentimental Journey". I went in most Fridays after getting my wages to see what was going cheap. On a very low wage I didn't have a lot of money spare.

As the shop used to be called The Beat Museum then i'd imagine so.

I'm not sure about the Beat Connection site. However, Peter who worked in Defunkt still sells online via.....

Before my time, but does anyone rememeber Beat On Tracks in Clydebank in the mid-70s?

I know the guy who used to run the place, and although I haven't seen him in years, he's one of those characters that sticks with you, endlessly enthusiastic about music.

You're the man Alex, that was speedy :D

If I remember correctly, it would have been the opticians as that fits the memory I have exactly and I don't think it was that far along from the Co-Op.

Welcome to Hidden Glasgow Ian

I am not from the West End but I am sure Dex or one of the other members will follow with some information. Do you have any other details about these record shops?

Thank you for the welcome. Little bit of info on the two volume record shops. the one in anniesland cross was situated on the same side as the anniesland cross mansions, near to the cross rather than where the railway bridge at the station. the one in byres road was down from tennents bar, between highburgh road and havelock street.
