ST GEORGES STUDIOS

Anyone have any background on the St Georges Studios building on St Georges Road, Charing Cross, the one that has grassroots restaurant on the ground floor. Its between the mansions and the snooker hall. This is now an office block. I know it used to be a bakery but thats all. Any photos of the old inside would be interesting. Cheers n that.

Aye. Speakers Corner was in the unit that is now Starbucks and then moved next door into what is now Driftwood (was Los Borachos).

I knew where you are talking about, it has a Driver's car accessory place on the ground floor. I don't remember it being a bakery although I do remember one being in the lane behind it.

St George's studios are home to amongst others, the offices of the new company formed when Ideal World and Wark Clements TV Production companies merged recently. Before this, it was Ideal World's home. They produced some world class shows like 'Vids', yer staple late night Channel 4 anarchic video review show. I believe Muriel Gray has offices in the studios too.

Ah, that will be why it always seemed to be shot in the Woodlands "Millennium" Park at the bottom of Arlington Street. Always seemed a very odd choice for a filming location!

Scooter: We knew where you were talking about; just clearning up the Speakers Corner thing, ie it was always on the other side of the M8.

Don't know if they're still there, but we went to a Co called CC Media in there to get a quote for web site design, prep and host. This must have been about 1997. After we went over the spec, basically just a 30 page site with pics, the guy sat back, hummed and hawed, and said, with a straight face "We could get this going for about £30,000 but I think we'd be getting closer to £50,000 by the time we got the bells and whistles on it, and started on an e-commerce section and a feedback form".

It may surprise you to hear we didn't go with this generous offer, but went to an alternate within walking distance, and got a fully maintained package for £3 k, par for the course back then if you had absolutely no in-house capabilities.

I still remember coming out the door beside the then snooker hall and asking my colleague if there really were 4 zero's after the 3.

Over 12 years ago? That is astonishing!!!

When was NCSA Mosaic released again? Perhaps the prices he quoted included the use of his time machine

Well spotted, the fingers always seem go ballistic just at the wrong place.

I was only coming off bulletin boards and going browsing around 94/95 and venturing into non-modem email, so 'over 12 years ago' would have been a bit optimistic, and maybe £30-50 k not so insane.

Thanks for the alert
