prison cells under fruit market

Postby Fossil » Sun Feb 08, 2004 9:02 pm

i think i seen this topic on here but cant find it to reply properly.
Anyway I found out today that there might be cells under the fruit market in the merchant city. It has nothing to do with the slave trade. The site is of an old police station that once stood there. I\the market might have been built on the old foundations.
Other info:it was located in a lane called Police Lane.
Anyone else here of this lane?

Hope this helps

Hello Tim,
We spoke today at the Glasgow Police Museum.
It would be good if we knew someone who has seen the cells under the fruit market..........certainly the old Central Police Office (1825-1906) would be an explanation.
Police Lane was the lane separating the police station from the City Halls on South Albion Street (later just Albion Street).
LMK if you hear anything.

I found the previous message regarding this subject. :)
It is in "Ideas for New Projects" and was a question/suggestion from Anne.

I remember reading somewhere ... a newsgroup somewhere about slave prisons.

Some guy had opened a wee shop in teh fruitmarket and was given a guided tour of the basements which contained prisons! It seems feasible.

Or is this simply becoming an urban myth? Does it matter if it is?

At present the fruit market is being renovated as part of the ongoing work next door at the city halls(new rehersal rooms for one of the BBC
orchestras).I dare say you could go in for a wee look a no one Keep guard
(Albion street Entrance)
I Have spoken with a Glasgow veg merchant he tells me there is an uderground store. This is,I think going to be a club. There is a bit of a
kick up about another late licence for the area.
As for bannana rooms, the only ones that I know of in that area are under Bar91 in Candelriggs They are all used for storage for the property above
bit dark and damp!
Also starting to build on the area that was a car par in Ingram street
hope they take the time to excavate as it,s an Important area in the city

There are certainly extensive tunnels under parts of Albion Street. Go to John Commerfords for a haircut and ask him about it. They keep finding new bits of underground tunnel and new rooms behind walls...he reckons they go on quite a way under the street. The downstairs bit of his salon alone goes on for ages.
