Tron Catacombs

Postby Blueboy » Fri Oct 22, 2004 7:52 pm

Read an article in the Evening Crimes (Times) today about Halloween stuff which mentioned catacombs under the Tron Theatre. Anyone got any info on this? Would surely be easy to arrange a tour if we ask nicely!!

Please post a link to the Evening Times article.

Then we can dissect the catacombs story ...

EATING OUT

The Tron is one of Glasgow's most haunted locations, with a spectral boy and girl being spotted in one wing of the theatre and bar/restaurant, eerie presences and strange phenomena experienced by staff and visitors. In fact it is so spooky a troupe of psychics, sceptics, scientists, mediums armed with full ghost-hunting paraphernalia visit once a year to amass evidence of otherworldly shenanigans.

The city catacombs lie beneath the main Tower, and where the Victorian Bar and restaurant now stands has been a town hall, workshops, and used to be the old theatre - and a few of the acts who "died" on stage are reputed to still be hanging around! Ghastly gastronomes can find out more about the Tron's history at a special Hallowe'en dinner next Saturday.

•The Tron, Sat, Oct 30, 7.30pm-9pm, £28, tel: 0141 552 8587.

I'll say nothing about the hauntings, since others are far more qualified. But, as a historian, I can say that the phrase "city catacombs" means nothing to me, that the building was a church (rather than a theatre) before it was the Tron theatre, and that the town hall (in the sense of being the administrative headquarters of the burgh) was across the road in the Tontine building. None of this strikes me as being substantiated.

Anyone have any checkable references that suggest the truth of any of this? I feel an e-mail to Vicky Davidson coming on ...

EDIT: Have just e-mailed her to ask for the source of her story.

Maybe they're confusing "catacombs" with the low-level railway that runs under the Tron?

She says she got it all from various Tron staff. So I will e-mail the Tron PR folks and ask for a tour of the catacombs. I don't think I'll be needing my head torch and camera ...

there's some amazing stuff on that page:
Burned for receiving herbs and potions from the Queen of Elfame
Burned at Castle Hill ... for receiving herbs from the Queen of the Faeries

These poor people had the misfortune to be related to a witch:
(Husband) 81 year old man pressed under 700 pound of Iron bars
(Son) Legs destroyed in Spanish boots
(Daughter) 7 years old, tortured with thumbscrews

My personal favourite:
Burned for using her daughter as a flying horse

Yes, this was a wonderful place to live in the old days.

Reminds of a very uncomfortable afternoon I spent in Inveraray a few years ago, when I made the mistake of taking a business vsitor there and he decided a trip to the Jail exhibition would be enlightening.

He and his family had been run out of Iraq, and although interesting, the exhibition in the Jail has a very detailed, explicit and graphic display of the torture equipment and methods used in days gone by.

I thought I knew most of the details, but this exhibition (if it's still as detailed today) give a disturbing insight into those who were supposedly responsible for law, order and protection of the public. It became quickly apparent that torture in those days probably also equated to a death sentence, regardless of what the 'court' found later.

Inveraray Jail exhibition, recommended
