Hi!
I've been trying to find photos of St Enoch Station Platform area and i'm having "nae luck" ...begining to wonder if imagined the place. It seems to me that for such a large station to have left so little trace behind is pretty sad......... :(

Dave,
I do not have any material but I can assure you that online images do exist. I viewed these images as part of an online thread on a now-defunct Scottish chat forum about 18 months ago. I suspect the images are from some publication, since the likes of the Mitchell (as you probably already know) have almost nothing but one or two not very revealing internal pictures. I will scour around my hard copy notes and see if I can source anything... but I'm not confident... but they do exist. Incidentally did you know that St Enoch's was the first main terminus and when the company refused to share it with the rival railway building company, the rival owner thought 'stuff you I'll build a bigger and better one' - the result was the Central Station (reputed to have employed more bell hop boys than any other hotel in the U.K. at it's height!)

Dave,
As I feared, I'm not having much luck tracing my previous source. One other snippet that showed up just might provide another trail for you. The huge clock that once adorned the central concourse of the St Enoch's station was relocated to Cumbernauld Shopping centre when the station was demolished. The clock is still there (it features in a scene in Gregory's Girl). It might be that whoever brought the clock to Cumbernauld (the New Town Corporation, now Council?) had some connection or affection for St Enoch's, after all most of the New Town population came from Glasgow. In that case, it might be that there are more artefacts to be sourced via the Cumbernauld route. Just thought I should raise it in case it sparks off any possibilities.

What was the building in front of the modern structure just right of centre in the old picture? There is another modern flat-roofed building in the new picture there now (you can see where the same tower is on the new picture, just right of centre).

(I'll assume you're referring to the old building at the corner of Howard
St and Dixon St in the 'before' picture)

Believe it or not, it was a small building by Alexander "Greek" Thomson,
which, like a lot of his work, was thoughtlessly demolished by our city
fathers...

Someone called Stuart Neville has compiled a great site with some really
cool pics of St Enoch (and other subjects - ferries, the finnieston tunnel, etc).

St Enoch Station here.

St Enoch Station Hotel here.
