New book on 'Past Present' theme

Postby ibtg » Fri Jan 17, 2014 1:40 pm

I posted this on the suggestions board, but then thought maybe it might do better as a new topic:-

I recently received this email (below) and felt that the project was too much for me, but considering all the work you guys have done on the 'Past Present' theme, that some of you might be interested.

I have already pointed them in the direction of the Mitchell, Evening Times and Herald archives, although I'm sure they knew about them already. And I have mentioned to them some of the books on the same theme that have been done in the past. But another couple of books on the subject can't hurt and you guys do it so well, so read on and consider......

Dear Sir/Madam,
Having stumbled across your website, I am contacting you to inform you that Amberley Publishing, the UK’s fastest growing local and specialist history publishing company, is currently looking for new or experienced authors, photographers and members of the community to contribute to our exciting Through Time series of local history books.

With over 400 titles in the series to date, we are now looking for the following potential titles in your area: Central Glasgow Through Time and Glasgow West End Through Time.

The Through Time concept is a ninety-six page, then-and-now picture book, containing around ninety-two old photographs or postcards, each paired with a new photograph in full colour, to show how the same scene, or a related one, has changed over time. Each pair of photographs has a short descriptive caption. Books from the series have already proven highly popular among locals and are stocked in all good local bookshops, including national retailers such as Waterstones.
If you are interested in producing this kind of book for us, or know anybody else who might be, please let me know through email, or pass on my contact details, which can be found below.

I can of course supply any further information as required.

Kind regards,

Sian Griffiths

Whoever contributes, I hope the photo pairs are better lined up than in the Edinburgh one. Bitchy, moi? True, though.

After some correspondence, it doesn't seem the best gig - author is expected to source the before shots and clear them for publication with no budget....

I spent 3 weeks back and forward discussing this as I was interested in taking on the project. At no point could I get a firm idea of what was in it for me so I walked. The offer was 8% on each £14 book but that was net so start by taking off their expenses from the £14. Then add the discounted books sold to retailers who probably get them at £7, take off the publishers costs and postage and as far as I could tell it was 8% of not very much in return for doing all the work and being legally responsible if a copyright claim came up.

I asked for estimates of earnings thinking that they could use their least successful books takings as a low figure and their best seller as a maximum but I never got an answer.

It also kept changing from a Glasgow and suburbs to Glasgow city centre pictures. I think most of the available city centre pictures have been used too often to make the book different.

If I am going to do a book now I will do it for myself, have full control and know where the money is going.

Thank you, guys, for your expertise.

In reading your comments I reckon I took the right decision without really knowing why! ::):
