I didn't think the Glasgow Royal Lunatic Asylum was much of a secret? It was the fourth Scottish asylum, and it moved to its current site at Gartnavel in 1843. The old asylum then became the City Poorhouse.
You should be able to see where it was by using the slider on this link here.

From an architectural point, it was probably one of the biggest losses in Glasgow. It was the first asylum to be be built on the 'radial' (or panopticon) design. I think there were a couple of hospitals in England which utilised the design, and it was adapted for another two later Scottish asylums (Royal Crichton and Murray Royal), but it really gained popularity in Ireland where there are half a dozen examples still standing.

The Mitchell holds a book about the Lock Hospital, although its more like a bound manuscript, and I think the Magdalene Laundry has been discussed here a few times before.

From the Ordnance Survey Names Books, Lanarkshire Vol. 31

Named as:

City Poorhouse or alternatively City Poors' House and Hospital

Described as:

"A large collection of buildings. The central edifice is a cruciform, and is surmounted by a dome of considerable altitude. the Hospital departments are those buildings at the S.East corner immediately from the offices".

No need to apologise - The Lock is a very interesting part of Glasgows past. The book is well worth a read.

I'd never heard of the Lock till this thread.

Stuff like this is what HG is about.
I hear the people sing.

I read about this place a few years back and coudlnt believe no one knew about it... or was it one of those places folk chose not to talk about I wonder..very sad stories came from these asylums of children being put in there because of incest... The soldiers from that time who were infected had a special ward at the Royal it seems.. no asylum for them then...and why the Gallowgate Barracks were moved to Maryhill.
