Theatre mentioned on Reporting Scotland

Postby partickular » Sat Jan 24, 2004 12:02 am

On Tuesday night there was a piece on Reporting Scotland about an old neglected theatre which was being re-opened to house a small Celtic Connections gig. I think it was called the Panopticon. They stated that it was above an amusement arcade, and below that, in the basement, there was a zoo (!) It had a capacity of 1000, was painted light blue and had a fairly ornate facade. It was hoped that ineterst in it could be stimulated in order to try to restore the building. I've probably been walking past it for donkeys without realising, but can anyone tell me where it is, as they didn't say on Reporting Scotland. Thanks in advance.

It's in the Trongate to the immediate West of the junction of the
Trongate and King St, and you cant miss it. It was featured on that BBC
programme "Restoration" and it's famously where Stan Laurel made
his stage debut. Up until a few years ago I had no idea it was a
theatre - it's in the real shitty part of the Trongate. Actually, all of
the Trongate's shitty really, innit?

shitty trongate

Postby escotregen » Mon Jan 26, 2004 11:06 am

James, re the shitty Trongate. I was quite taken aback recently to see the extent of the re-development plans 'about to be implimented' according to the Council. It's a pity the Council were not able to be more successful in saving some of the priceless warhouse and commercial buildings around the cross area; Greek Thomson etc. Someone on another thread asked recently about vanished pubs in Glasgow, one such was the 'House of Lords'. I can't remember the street name but the pub faced the big bonding warehouse converted by Millers into private flats. I believe the factor holding up the Trongate redevelopment is the bitter warfare between the existing site-owners, especially the smaller ones who are reluctant to sell the smaller sited needed to package the larger ones. Everyone wants their share of the major ultimate profits!

Indeed. The irony of the Council trying, somehow, to implement redevelopment
plans in the city is not lost on me. The amount of architectural vandalism
carried out by our "city fathers" almost defies belief. Alexander Thomson
built a row of tenenments on the south side which were demolished to
make way for the original Ring Road proposal - it never happened so the
tenements were lost forever. See the condition of his Church in the Gorbals
for further proof of their misguided causes. Also, see the Saint Enoch
Station thread - they demolished the entire structure, viaducts and
all, claiming the site was to be used to house a MoD building - it never
happened. A 200+ bed Victorian hotel building and railway station in the
heart of the city centre gone for good.

The only thing the Council seems to do right is build shopping centres.
There comes a point when you need to ask how many of these eyesores
does one city centre need?
