Argyle Street rail tunnel

Postby alanmac » Mon Jan 19, 2004 12:06 pm

There's an open tunnel section at the back of Argyle Street, west end (behind the small 2 storey house, no. 1129 a block up from Creme de la Creme)
I used to work there and the only access is at the back of 1129 or round to the right of the back lane (access at no. 1103)
Its a fair drop down to it so I never explored it at all but has anyone been down? And what line does that connect with?

This is part of the line that goes under Kelvingrove park and meets up with the Argyle Line at Exhibition Centre.

What he said :) - it was closed in 1964, as was the Argyle Line, but
unlike the Argyle Line, it wasn't reopened. They apparently did consider
it, as the line travelled up to Kelvinbridge, Botanic Gardens, Kirklee
and Maryhill (Central). (It actually continued to Possil, then all the way
to Rutherglen junction via Springburn, Barmulloch, Provan, Denniston/Carntyne
and Parkhead.) There was also talk of reopening this line as a Tram route.

Another opening

There is another opening when you follow the curved road (which name escapes me for the moment) from Argyle Street where the road up from FInnieston joins on (PC World, kind of area). Go along this road until you get to the hydro board yard, and look over the wall.

St Vincent Terrace by any chance?

Interesting fact i found from an old map is that the bowling green there used to be a wee loch.
