Ah nuts, I loved that shop - absolutely rammed to the rafters with the most ludicrous assortment of random tat, leaving barely enough room to stand in - was always a thrill when they cut keys for you, in case the process created a spark and the whole lot went up!

And I got two of my flats from the ads in the window!

That was George the Ironmongers, although I think it was under Asian ownership latterly. It was there for many years - I remember it from as far back as the late 1960's, when I lived a short distance away, in Park Road. A real dark, dingy glory hole of a place but they had everything you could possibly need in the way of hardware etc. I think they even sold paraffin at some point, out of a big tank in the back room of the shop. Imagine the Health & Safety people's attitude towards that in this day and age!

I believe as tenants and a condition of their lease they were being asked to pay their share for the recent refurbishment of the building which they were not willing to do and hence the closure of the business.

Better views showing off the 3D nature of the signage...

I wonder what'll happen to that? All the other Root & Fruits signs are now painted flush onto the walls above the shops. If they just cover that up and paint a sign on top of it, it'll ruin the flat uniformity. It's a beauty as well.
I'm assuming it's Roots & Fruits who now own it ?

Get it saved for the new street displays in the new Transport Museum - why have a museum full of repro old stuff when the real thing is there for the taking!

No, it's owned by the Giovanazzi's who own the chippy, what was O'Henry's downstairs, the pretentious Italian restaurant and I think Oddbins. They've already had problems from Historic Scotland over the frontage on some of their shops and in the past they have shown that they can be very reluctant to pay their fair share on the upkeep of one of Glasgow's most interesting listed buildings. If it's going to cost money to have it preserved it will probably mysteriously fall off into a bin one night.

It would be good to see it preserved in the new transport museum in their 1930's street, which I think they are going to recreate.

It would be nice to see that one in the new museum as it is so well preserved.

This one isn't. 48 (?) Oswald Street

It said Walter S Lang before the decorators scraped the paintwork. I guess it must be covered by a new sign by now.

Shame - it might still be there because I only snapped that on Monday. There is a sign on the next shop which is pretty much beyond deciphering now.
