Re the above. Yes, it could well say West End Fishmongers. Thanks. I'll have another look later but no, it isn't what was McCallums. McCallums was a few shops further west in what had been Annie Lundy's fishmongers in the 50s-70s. Both shops seem to be in the process of renovation.

This was a lovely traditional toy shop called The Walrus and the Carpenter which I used to go in to with my friend after our lectures at the Dental School in 1977-78. It specialised in good quality wooden toys and games, soft plush cuddly animals, collectors dolls and all kinds of interesting pocket money/stocking filler items for children. (My friend and I were obviously still big kids at heart and went in to say hello to a particularly cute plush white seal pup with huge dark eyes that each of us just longed to give a home to - but sadly could never afford it on our student grants!).

I was reminiscing about it (for the first time in years) just the other day and, when I saw this photo by chance whilst visiting HG for the first time, just had to register and put in my tuppenceworth.
Thanks for the memory!

Well spotted , PaulK.

Amazing how a photo can bring back memories. I remember being taken into this shop in the late 70's early 80's and it was like some kind of magical toy kingdom. It was nothing like any other toy shop filled with lego, meccano and plastic wrapped toys of the day. This place looked like everything in it had been lovingly created by some kindly old toymaker from a fairy story. I remember being bought a stuffed raccoon named Wrecker. God knows what happened to him.

Fanny Trollopes

Postby onyirtodd » Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:08 am

Anyone near Fanny Trollopes at Finnieston today with a camera might catch a shot of the previous sign. I caught a brief glimpse earlier - something to do with accountant, maybe turf accountant.

Stumbled across the West End Fishmonger on the previous page of this thread as I scurried back to work from dropping my car off with Citroen - it's on Argyle St opposite Anderston Polis Station if anyone's looking for it!

Tried to take a few pics with the exposure ramped up cos it has a quite lovely plaster cornice and ceiling rose inside - the wind and general gloominess of the day conspired against good photography, but I'll maybe try again when I go to collect the car tomorrow!

Hope whoever eventually takes it over doesn't rip it all out or stick up a hideous suspended ceiling.

Anyways, here's a look inside:

Who knows? - They might just be sympathetic and keep the ceiling?
Saw one at Eglinton Toll in the past few weeks - corniced ceiling exposed during renovation , bish bash etc boxed in under suspended ceiling and hidden ( or preserved :? ) for another few years.

This one is at 566 Dumbarton Road , currently under renovation with two previous generations of signs visible
