Underground World: Underneath the Red Road Flats

Postby Pointyears » Wed Feb 08, 2012 2:36 pm

Bittersweet times are these as the blocks are soon to be demolished. My childhood trips to Barmulloch to visit my Granny and Papa were heralded by the Red Road flats - an institution or a blight depending on who you listen to.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone has posetd to Hidden Glasgow about this site before, which took cameras deep underneath the red road flats to record the frozen in time commmunal bar and bingo hall:

I haven't seen that before. Thanks!

The people who made it have an exhibition it seems:

Noticed last time I was driving on the M80 that one of the slabs now has all its outside cladding removed. Is this going to be a slow disassembly (thought this was how they were going to do it, given they are steel framed) or a blowdown?

My understanding is that they are removing all the asbestos and sundry other bits and pieces, then the remainder will be blown down (up?) at some point later this year.

Was told yesterday that the flats have to be collapsed into each other. cant see an implosion due to the framework of the flats. Was also told that the owner of the brig is demanding compensation before the demolition but they want to pay afterwards. Don't know if this is true or if its just local hearsay.
