Basements in Albion st.

Postby BEENAROUND » Fri Aug 06, 2004 1:00 am

Back in the1970's I was installing fire alarms in the buildings belonging to the corporation. These buildings formed a large square Albion st, Trongate, High st and Bell st.When working in the basements I remember a strong smell of bananans and fruit.Obviously these were storerooms and still in use.I assume because this was located near the old fruit market this was the storage but I could not work out how the stored fruit was moved to and from the market .Were there any tunnels between the corporation buildings and the old fruit market?

yes, but rather than build expensive full-size tunnels, they used those old-fashioned vacuum tubes to transfer the fruit. an employee in the storeroom would place an individual banana in the tube, where it would zoom along to the market. their downfall was in not making the tubes large enough for mangoes and pineapples etc.

it could be true!

Fossil, might be an idea to say "This has been covered here..." or something. Would make it a bit more obvious what you're linking to, and why you're posting it...
