Also, take a look at this portion of map. It's from a Scotland tourist guide I picked up in Hay-on-Wye recently, seems to date from around the early 50s. According to that, Bridge St station isn't on Bridge St at all! Although they may be simply indicating that the platforms aren't on Bridge St, which is kind of odd for an overground tourist map...

During the refurbishment, SPT (or whatever they were calling themselves
at the time...) were informed by the Fire Brigade that one station-to-surface
exit was not enough. So, the re-design of the stations affected tended to use
the original exit as a fire escape, whilst a new main exit was built at the other
end of the platform. Some stations were not switched around like this (e.g. Cessnock
and, I think, Shields Road) but others undoubtably were - Cowcaddens, Bridge
St, and probably a few more.

Would the existing fire escape portal not be in roughly the same position as the old station used to be?

In some cases yes. Cowcaddens fire escape sits on a bit of grass a few
yards from the main entrance. I believe the original entrance to that
particular station was at the ground floor of a tenement, as is the case
with Cessnock and Kelvin Hall. As for Bridge St, I'm guessing the original
station entrance was were the fire escape now is i.e. not in Bridge St at all.

Tiz curious why its so far back from bridge St on the old map... perhaps they left space to "park" your horse.... an early form of park-and-ride? ::):

Great photos. I always wondered what it was like before.

I wonder how it would look if they were upgrading it these days rather than 25 years ago, because let's face it, it's pretty dingy even now.

I reckon with all the insistence on natural light and space these days, they'd have kept the roof windows and all that. I wonder how long they'll leave it for before doing it up again....

It does look a bit shabby and a tad dated now. What it needs is a complete Jubilee, or woz it Millenium Line style overhaul. Has there evr been any intention to expand the system does anyone know? Iv never heard any such plans myself, but always thought it could be quite easily done. Well, for the South side and parts of the East end at least.

This map of 1910 (based on OS Maps published in 1912-13) is taken from Eric Eunsons Illustrated History of the Gorgabls and shows a small road/path(?) leading to the entrance of the subway station. The brick fire escape portal sits roughly there today, marked with the burgandy circle:

The book 'Circles Under The Clyde' illustrates various suggested expansions,
the most interesting of which was a eastern circle, which was to branch off
north of Buchanan St and south of Bridge St (or maybe just north of Bridge
St, I cant recall without looking at the book) to form a large figure eight, lying
on it's side. I think it was to have stations at Kennedy Street, Dinart St and
one near Belvidere - I'll look this up when I get home in about half an hour.
There were other suggested expansions from different era's some of
which used abandoned rail lines, so the underground wouldn't have been
underground in some places!

The Jubilee line blew me away, especially at Canary Wharf.

If they want to expand the undergound, they could downgrade the innercity stations like Partick and High Street and use the existing low level services as an expanded underground. I reckon it'd be much easier to link transport hubs with important local destinations like Glasgow Harbour, the SECC, Hampden/Parkhead and even Glasgow Airport this way; they could even use the tunnel under Kelvingrove for a Kelvinbridge-SECC link

I think a modern upgrade would probably bring more people through it, though I'd prefer to have it open later on Sundays for a start. :roll:

other (maybe cheaper) suggestions:
* underground direct link/travelator from st. enoch to central station
* underground direct link/travelator from buchanan bus station to buchanan st/queen st
* extra link to Glasgow Harbour development (canary wharf style coolness please!)
* upgrade appearance overall, the new openings for the Buchanan Street station are pretty nice for example.
*eastern circle, as descibed by james

Yeah, Canary Wharf station is pretty impressive. If you want to feel small ride up those escalators!.
