St Vincent Street 'Wee Free' church

Glasgow has added another memorial to it's collection.

Recently the dedication service took place at th site of the new memorial to those soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross. Located next to the new Korean War Memorial near Glasgow Cathedral.

Good pictures Alex, and a worthy tribute to those who earned this award. Ican't help but wonder why it has taken such a long time for the city to offer some sort of general recognition for these worthies of Glasgow who earned the right to have "VC" after their name. Anyway, it's a fine looking memorial, and its clever simplicity renders it memorable in itself.

Not hidden as such, but it is on a quiet back road that not many have reason to drive along.

This is the Shepherd's Lane cairn on Gilbertfield Road, on the eastern outskirts of Cambuslang. It commemorates the folk who left the nearby Dechmont Barracks to walk along this shortcut to Newton Station on their way to far-flung postings in both World Wars, many of whom never returned.

I thought I had a pic of the plaque itself from an earlier wander, but can't find it. It reads:

"This cairn is to commemorate all the soldiers who walked this path to Newton Station to go to the 1st and 2nd World Wars. And all those who didn't return. We will remember them. Donated by Pride of Place."

The cairn was built in 2006, but was vandalised within weeks. One of the plaques is still missing, can't remember what it said, probably the name Sheperd's Lane, as there's no reference to it elsewhere. Thankfully, the local morons have left it alone pretty much since then.

Anyone who does geocaching might recognise it too!

Finally found the photos of the Nitshill Memorial.....pity its condition today is not as seen here.
perhaps new build at the old Jackie Connors site could contain a prerequesite that as part of the site maintenance, they accept the general provision for the war memorial....?

The shrubs have all been cut back and I expect the monuments to be cleaned within the next couple of weeks.

It is the responsibility of the Council to keep this area maintained including the memorials. I will be asking about the fact that it should be on a regular maintenance programme to ensure that it is done more than once every year.

Hello everyone ,I am new to all this so bear with me,Ifought for years for the nitshill mining memorial to be built and eventually it came to fruition,a couple of pointers that I remember when we unveiled the memorial was that when we asked the railway on whos ground it was proposed they (allegedly) did not know of the cenotaph (but the lawyers sorted it out)and all was agreed that it could be used,To date there are 63 names on the war memorial and 61 for the mining memorial,the railway bridge is only 1 off 3 in scotland built on its rock foundation (called the nitshill fault),I like all of your counterparts have taken photographs of memorials and over 1000 headstones of our war dead.
In finishing this session I wonder does anone put a wreath on the mining memorial at the same time as the war memorial.

Welcome to Hidden Glasgow and thanks very much for providing this information.

There is no wreath laying takes place at the time of remembrance Sunday. In 2001 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the disaster Together with the local Community Council I arranged for a services to be conducted at the memorial attended by local school children and the local priest and minister. The Lord Provost Alex Mosson attended and lay-ed a wreath.
