Tunnock’s in first profit warning

Lanarkshire confectioner Tunnock's has issued the first profits warning in its 117-year history, citing rising costs.

The firm, which produces Caramel Wafers and Teacakes, has told its 600 staff that severe rises in the cost of production over the past 12 months are taking their toll on the business.

The family-owned company has been hit by a trebling in its water bill and a global rise in the price of materials such as cocoa.

Tunnock’s counts the cost of ‘making things in Scotland’

Tunnock's, the Lanarkshire confectioner which employs 600, has issued the first profits warning in its 117-year history, as rising costs threaten the future of one of Scotland's oldest food manufacturers.

The maker of the famous marshmallow teacakes and caramel wafers has told staff that severe rises in the cost of production over the past 12 months are taking their toll on the business.

The family-owned company has been hit by a sharp worldwide rise in raw materials, such as cocoa and glucose, but the costs of producing in Scotland have also been hiked by the spiralling costs of water, gas and electricity.

Scottish Water bills have trebled in the last two years while gas prices have risen by 66% in the last 12 months. The company says the costs are unlikely to come down in the short term.

Perhaps if everyone on the forum goes out and buys some caramel wafers and tea cakes, it'll all be fine?

Is my memory playing tricks or was it Tunnock's vans that kept a running total of vehicles in the fleet on the back?

Do they still do it?

Don't know about water, but aren't their energy prices coming down along with everyone else's at this time?

Maybe they need a new Financial Director?

The could also have a word with their Sales Director...

The Co sells their teacakes 10 pack for £1.25 (I say 'sells' but I think the term 'gather dust' would be closer).

Asda was £1.09 last time I was there, and always had half empty shelves.

Tesco were £1.02, then 96 p on semi-empty shelves, but has gone to near permanently empty shelves since the price went down to 64 p.

The wee stall at the Forge Market is too dear to bother even looking at now.

Those numbers indicate Tunnock's trade prices, so if they can't make a profit on that retail price range, they need a new strategy.

Can't comment on the wafers, don't like 'em, don't buy 'em, don't know the prices :(

I hoped someone else would be the first to say that, that's how I eat them as well but I didn't wanna look like a greedy shite!
