Bings

Yeah, there's the big one behind Westburn where they blew up a supposedly unexploded bomb the other week (!), but I heard that part of it cannot be removed due to badger setts.

There's also a smaller bing behind Newton, not so high as the Westburn one, but some of the old mine buildings still loiter amongst the trees.

There are also two out just a little towards Blantyre - the once enormous Bardykes on the main road, and Loanend Bing behind the old Dalton School. The railway line that once ran behind Hallside School terminated at the latter.

At the moment, I live on Woodlands Rd, near Charing Cross - not too far from your old Woolworths signs! Most of my family are still in Halfway and Westburn though.

There's a few nice old pics of the bings on Ed Boyle's site, with loads of other old Cambuslang pics. Have a look at:

http://www.boyle.ukpals.com/Cambuslang/Cambuslang.html

Bings might actually be a good topic for photos here, since most of them are now being removed, I think they're far more interesting places than the wee rows of twee houses that replace them!

I'd forgotten, but for anyone curious what a bing is, there's a pic of one that I sent to Ed Boyle's site that I mentioned above, it looms large in the background!

I'll join you guys if your heading out there in the next week or so. Mod Foss, drop me a line when you've got a time and date. Preferably late nextweek or the early part of the following week would suit me grand. This weekend is a write off due to work.

I've stuck a few pics of this area onto a Yahoo photos page, if anyone is interested. Most of the pics are of industrial sites just prior to and during redevelopment. A few bings, farms, the old Hallside Steelworks site, Hallside Primary School (old and new, under construction) and various other bits and pieces from my various dog walks there.

Most of the photos are from Hallside/Drumsagard, with a few of Westburn/Halfway/Newton/Gilbertfield Castle etc.

The photos range from about late 80s to 2000, and are all scans, didn't have a digital cam till last year!

Apologies for the quality and file size of some of them, they were taken with various cheap cameras over the years, from 110 to point-and-shooty type 35mm, and even an old disk camera! And my scanning and Photoshopping skills are not what they could be, hence the bad blends and the 600k files in some earlier efforts! Sometimes, it's just easier to sellotape two pics together than try to join them in Photoshop!
