This was probably done so that kids could run up and down the steps through the water. I seem to remember seeing them do this at the time of the Garden Festival. Our compensation culture probably wouldn't allow such a thing now in case they tripped and broke something, but I suppose we were less enlightened in those days.

The sheeting's recent, in their infinite wisdom they seem to have used mild steel for the sheet, not even galvanised, and nice shiny screws to sort of hold it in place.

It's so thin, and the screws are so small, once the neds discover it, it's sure to ripped off. Some of it already shows signs of a having had an exploratory heave around the edges.

The batteries gave out, or I'd have included a shaft at the top, in a depression just to the left of the first shot. It's filled with gravel to the top, and covered with a wire grid, but I'd guess it was where the original waterworks were located to supply the whole feature. If they're still down there, it would take more that a bit of digging to get them back.

It was called the Coca-Cola Roller.

Enjoyed looking at these pics. A bit frightening to think it was 17 years ago already.

All I can remember is getting lost in the maze. I was with the Brownies and spent most of the day crying/ waiting at the lost children's hut thing.

Brilliant pics! I'd forgotten about the old Daily Record HQ, or maybe I just blanked it from my mind? Anyway, cheers.

They should have incorporated it more into the design. That way the staff would be able to get to the casino after work without having to go outside. The staff recreational area will look out onto the Rotunda, so at least that's something.

The other noticeable thing about it is how small it is in comparison to the new BBC Scotland building, under construction a wee bit further along the Clyde. :?

Don't know how much of anything recognisable that remains will be wiped out by this, so might be time to visit and grab any last pics:-

It has taken 18 years, but at last the go-ahead has been given to plans to redevelop the site on the banks of the river Clyde which was used for the Garden Festival in Glasgow in 1988. Although the Glasgow Science Centre and a number of office blocks have been built or are planned in the area (the most recent, high profile development being the new BBC Scotland HQ), a large part of the site has been lying derelict for all those years. Now, at last, planning approval has been given for the 30-acre site. This will result in the creation of a 150-bed hotel, 300 new homes and an office development. Work should start later this year but it will take over five years to complete.
