The Mote of Mark is a defended hilltop overlooking the Urr estuary. It was the court or citadel of a powerful Dark Age chieftain, possibly one of the princes of Rheged. The site was occupied during the 6th century and appears to have been destroyed by fire in the 7th century.

Tolkien must have passed that way.

Sublime photograph, btw.

Near Galston, south of Castle Douglas, something lurks just off a side road:

Being a nicely wrapped cottage:

Complete with nicely wrapped garden shed:

Kirkcudbright harbour is still very harbour-like:

Finally, just outside Kirkcudbright, and as odd as that cottage in its way, a very perky twenty foot tall wicker man, clearly delighted with his new pants and bandana:

Hi Sharon

D @ G i agree, beautiful scenic area but nevertheless your pictures are good. before retiring i was a sales rep for 20 years and sold, along with many other lines, tourist postcards all over Scotland and the islands and i can tell you getting good interesting countryside views is not easy. standing looking at a nice view is one thing but photographing it is quite another but you manage to get interest into your photos..thats good cheers for now

As a youngster I recall going to "Galloway House" for a month with my class. It was a wonderfully different place and environment from my humble abode in Parkhead. My dormitory was called "Cree" after a local River.

We had lessons daily of course but we also had nice wee trips down to nearby Garlieston to the sweetie shop and to post letters and cards back home to our families in Glasgow.

Sunday's were of course reserved for the church service. I remember one Sunday the Minister going off on one about some perceived witch hunt of a man called Richard Nixon in America. I hadn't a clue who Nixon was then, let alone America, other than the place where Cowboys and Indians lived, but it's funny how things like that stick in your cranium.

I knew nothing about Galloway House, I enjoyed that it has a nice connection with Glasgow! It must have seemed like such a journey to the middle of nowhere.
