Glasgows River God

Postby Wayfarer » Mon Dec 15, 2008 12:51 am

Hello there from Pennsylvania , i was doing some research into whats known as a Conder token. It gets the name Conder from an author who wrote a book on the subject of 18th century tokens.
On my example is the Glasgow coat of arms and a date of 1791 in latin with Let Glasgow Flourish around the token. The reverse has a figure resting on an elbow with an overturn urn with CLYDE written on the urn , his oar has the St Andrews cross.
Ive searched long and weary and find myself here , who is this figure on the token/coin ? It looks classical greek or similar , any reference netwide simply refers to him as a River God.
Thats all fine and well , but what was his name ?

Ill see if i cant post a link to the picture of the very chap.Theres also a latin motto around him NUNQUAM ARESCERE , googling the term generally points me to other photos of this token.
There are references to the term in latin manuscripts Jupitor and Juno and other than that i couldnt read latin , the term is there though.
I believe NUNQUAM means Never , the other word im not sure.http://www.napoleonicmedals.org/coins/brit91-4.htm

By "the greek one" do you mean Poseidon?

You guys are the best , Brigitdoon i believe you got it spot on with "never to run dry" or something very like it.It fits in perfectly with the overturned urn which represents the River CLyde.
And Crustybint i think has solved the mystery of who it is.Looking at the token the fella has the same hair and beard , im satisfied its Father Clyde.

Some pictures of Bucks county Pa for those interested. The area was founded by Scots and Germans and it shows, we have a loch whereas nearby are lakes. Many streets are named after Scots who settled here and the towns replicated in name.We have an aberdeen and a glasgow , a dublin and Bucks county itself is named after Buckinghamshire.

Father Clyde may be a River God, but he still needs protection from the Glasgow pigeons.

It was a cool wee thread , educational too :) Im glad the photos were enjoyed.McConkeys Tavern is just one really nice inn, theres a few and then theres the drab bars and so on.
Ive taken possesion of a very old large book here , 1st edition circa 1890 by G Birkbeck Hill called Footsteps of Dr Johnson.
Its a long cold winter here , snows already on the ground and to stay it looks like. The perfect reading material i thought.
If anyones interested i can post a few pictures of the lithographs inside , there are many. The book itself is a good 3 inches thick and large and bulky , heavy too.Old thick pages, theres some old pressed flowers inside from goodness knows when or where.
