Anyone know about an old sawmill in Irvine which was probably visible from the coast? I think it is gone now, but was still there in the 70's. It had been there from the 1920's at least. I am very curious about it, especially the name of the owner.

The RCAHMS's
Canmore site has an entry for a sawmill in Irvine's Montgomery Street (can't direct link it as you have to log in to the site, etc). There's a bunch of photos there too taken in 1977, some show quite detailed interior views. It gives the name of the owner as "Matthew Wright and nephew".
Hope thats what you were looking for!

Hi maxpower,
Thanks for taking the time to search for me. That's a grat site. Can you please tell me the search parameters you used to get the pictures to appear? I don't seem to be able to get them to come up!

The parameters I used were simply "irvine sawmill" (without the quotes), which brought up a single result. There's an option on the right hand side saying "View images online" or words to that effect.
Need to make sure you are in the canmore section of the site as well.

Thank you very much maxpower! Now I need to find out who owned it previously.

Does anyone know how I can check the past ownership of this mill please? And does anyone know the history of the building...when it was built etc?

Sasine registers, for which you would need to consult in Ayr, the Mitchell Archives Glasgow or the National Archives in Edinburgh. No easy thing from the Antipodes.

Thanks My Word...yes I remember seeing that somewhere now. I wonder if an over the sea arm twist for my cousin is in order? Failing that I think I might write to the Mitchell, or there is another site I can ask someone to go and hava a look for me (very helpful people at TalkingScot - not that they aren't here as well!).

Send me a couple of cartons of Tooheys New or Carlton Cold [air freight thanks] and I guarantee I will spend hour upon hour searching for the place on your behalf. Fair dinkum.
