Face it, if there was to be no poverty we would all have to be equal because poverty is in the eye of the beholder, no matter what century we are in. To make poverty history we would all have to be communist/socialist and not many of us would like to do that.

How much do you reckon you and your family will spend on a day at the rally? Because who really benefits from this ???

Maybe work that out and decide whether its still worth attending, because surely if everyone just did something useful with that cash instead of attending a street party it would be of more use to all???

just a thought ;)

Maybe you should cut down your spending on make-up and you'd be able to feed a few thousand starving Africans pet.

I would like to go along, not just because of what I believe in but also to witness a part of scottish history.

Scotland has never experienced anything on this scale before and it will be interesting to see different types of people rather than the same boring old neds on the street corner.

And while everyones bitching about the cost of this, think of it another way, think of the money that all these visitors bring to the country and spend while theyre here.

That's assuming that people who don't go will be sitting around scratching their arses. I am sure many of us, not just me, give our time to actively helping worthy causes in their work. Standing around for hours is not for me, but I have plenty of friends who are attending the rally. Each to their own. Have a great day on Saturday and mind and stick on the sunblock.

Africa will always be poorer than here. This is because it is for the most part hot, dry, and totally unsuited to life. This is one of the reasons for why Europe and Asia advanced before Africa, climate. To 'end' poverty requires less people on the African continent and with unbelievably high birth rates, even with aids, this is not going to happen.

But is the best way to solve the problem until they get their population under control and solve the economic and political problems not to send aid. The amount the G8 have pledged is far too small.

It's not about sending aid, it's about stopping the crippling debt repayments that they are paying to western banks.

They will stop these repayments...and the countries will take more loans. Its a tempting thing to do. :?

and the French in particular
:x , please leave the French alone its not just them at fault, Chirac's just louder than the other leaders (strange to say this on Trafalgar Day or whatever :D ). Farm subsidies keep farmers in a job, if African farmers put produce on the market then hundreds of thousands of European farmers jobs would be lost. It would be the same situation as with the clothing imports from China (that the 'British' Peter Mandelson was happy to accept). None of us are farmers (I think) so we dont know how hard it would be.

What Africa needs is a proper African Union, with their own funding, their own EU type protectionist bloc. Free Trade is destroying the world, just look at the state of Scotland, we were one of its very first victims. Free sounds nice, it isnt. Globalisation is ruining Africa.

Globalisation is bad for Africa because the west is able to control their entire output of all goods. If they had economic protection of their own, they could set Africa-wide tarrifs on our exports. Its because we have deliberately stopped them from creating a real trade bloc that we are able to exploit them. :(

Here's my angle:

I don't have a problem with peaceful protestors. I do have a problem with ultraleftist thugs who have no interest in African poverty and simply want to cause mayhem.

As for aid, I don't see it making an enormous difference as long as fuckwits such as

Image

and

Image

are around. Remove them and a hell of a lot more aid aid may reach its intended recipients.
