Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Some dates which may aid understanding: Main Street station was opened by the City of Glasgow Union railway on 1/1/1872, following completion of the Shields Road to Bellgrove section of the CGU on 1/6/1871. It closed on 30/9/1900 to allow for the doubling of lines into St. Enoch and was replaced by ...

Re: The 4 hour threat of a fine

How can parking in a free car park possibly constitute a contract? There is no offer or acceptance, there is no consideration, and there is no intention to create legal relations. As the man said, it's a load of half- pikey bollocks.

Re: HBOS

Hasy, This takeover has nothing to do with the poor or even the rich. Does anyone believe this would have happened if many in Scotland were not calling for independence? This is nothing more than a strike at another of Scotland's national institutes and it began when Halifax (an English bank) took ...

Re: Glasgow East By-election

lets not forget MSPs and MPs are there to represent the people who democratically voted them in Almost true Hazy, but not quite. MPs are given a mandate by their consituency to present its views in Parliament. They are not, however, under any obligation to reflect the individual or collective views...

Re: State Funeral for Margaret Thatcher

The Belgrano was sunk during a period of ceasefire whilst a Peruvian peace proposal was being discussed. Wrong again. There was no "ceasefire" agreed between UK and Argentine forces at any point between the invasion of South Georgia on 2/4/82 and the Argentine surrender on 14/6/82. As Ted...

Re: State Funeral for Margaret Thatcher

The Junta in Argentina started the war, Mrs Thatcher just made sure there would be no peaceful solution to the Falklands issue at the time. WRONG I'd recommend this book: http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/graphics/covers/32083.jpg wherein Hugh Bicheno make it crystal clear that Galtieri and his mob were ...

Re: State Funeral for Margaret Thatcher

Aye. Can I add: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3724/is_199705/ai_n8781734 I'll save you the Dave Spart commentary on this mere account of the facts from a loyal Navy man but I'm sure you can extrapolate it. The Tories were certainly on their way out in the 83/84 election before the Falklan...

Re: State Funeral for Margaret Thatcher

OK, to sum up, the received wisdom here on HG is that: - everyone in Scotland hated Mrs Thatcher, - everyone in Wales hated Mrs Thatcher, - everyone in the north of England hated Mrs Thatcher, and - only a minority of elderly Tory voters in the south of England didn't hate Mrs Thatcher, but presumab...

Re: Annoying Words

Most irritating recent addition to the lexicon of lazy and annoying phrases has to be the use of "the 18 hundreds" instead of the 19th century. The same distracting error can be applied to any century. What's wrong with these people, can't they count to 21? Lazy, confusing, and wrong. Bah.
