Re: tunnels

I was posting this topic elsewhere when I remembered this thread back in Hidden Glasgow. It’s not quite really ‘tunnels’ but it is something of the sort. I was at today’s presentation on the Red Road demolition programme at the GHA Academy (really first class facility by the way). I discovered that ...

Re: Duke Street Prison

Chuppazzee the bodies were indeed buried within the prison walled area. The bodies of executed persons could not be buried on consecrated ground (that is Christian consecrated). Hence their burial within the prison confines. I have come across a version of where the graves are sited that differs fro...

Re: Duke Street Prison

A recently joined HG member was signposted to me becuase of my enduring fascination with Duke Street prison. I thought it appropriate to copy most of my pm reply here as a sort of recap. The Hidden Glasgow thread on Duke Street prison is about the best and most accessible source of information on Du...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

Dexter I appreciate you're holding a torch for the guy... but I cannot make any sense out of what you posted :? I mean why the heck would anyone want to use the language of circa wartime 1940s (if that's what you meant?) in a topical and ongoing discussion? You are anyway getting into pretty extrane...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

Whiffy indeed Dugald. You have maybe missing another point above :) … but meantime, I’m sure you appreciate that it is your term ‘brethren’ that is gratuitous. Interesting, your other expression; ‘ensure that the Germans are properly varnished’. It’s at the very least also ambiguous and open to all ...

Re: Wartime Glasgow--Excluding bombing.

No-ones asking any of you to pay for it so what the hell is the problem? The people killed on this ship were not the ones out fighting for the Fascists, they were civs like us, some of whom were actually refugees fleeing persecution, just to get caught in the cross-fire again. Their nationality, or...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

Dugald you're going around in ever diminishing semantic circles :) You said: "The Luftwaffe bombed Clydebank indiscriminately and wantonly", as opposed to simply saying " The Luftwaffe bombed Clydebank". The first suggests a level of barbarism, the second suggests an act of war.....

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

Peekay, I think we could debate a couple of aspects of when you say: Anyhoo, the reason Clydebank didn't get hit as hard as London or Coventry is the big luftwaffe squadrons were all in N. France or Germany and didn't have the range to get to the Clydeside. Oban was bounced by Heinkels on a few occa...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

HollowHorn, ‘pilot error’ indeed… as ever, your better side comes out and you are generous to the Luftwaffe: In addition to socceroo’s excellent posting I would add that all bombing of urban targets well into WW2 was, off course, to an extent wanton and indiscriminate because the aiming and sighting...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

In re-reading the more recent postings here it strikes me that for some people their recollections based on what were the experiences of children in an adults' world and the anecdotes and folklore of their families are understandably important to them, and I think maybe these recollections are salte...
