The subject of the "first" sound film is always a bit of a thorny one. Films with sound on disc were made as early as 1901, similar to the Al Jolson "Vitaphone" production THE JAZZ SINGER, often claimed to be the "first" sound films ever made by so many histories (not t...

Thank's for the howdy you two. It's always a bit odd taking the plunge. London's fabby, and I'm quite happy here, especially after Moscow which was like some kinda hell on Earth when I moved there in '93. A lot of my fave places are in Italy though, I try and go there as often as possible.

I was on a YOP scheme ('member them?) at the Hunterian Museum back in 1980, and used to wander all over the building. I remember the view from the roof of the Bute Hall was astounding, if a bit vertiginous (very low stone wall, very enormous drop on other side). You had to brave decades of pigeon sh...

The most discreet camera I've ever used was an Olympus XAII. The shutter was almost totally silent, and I shot a whole series of photos in Moscow (which was exhibited at the GFT (and some other places) back in 1995) on it. You still got great looking prints at 12x16. I'd started working there with a...

What the hell was "Paladin" by the way? I remember the name, but can't remember what he/she/it actually was. Google just shows millions of pages about some kinda sword and sorcery type figure situation.

The opening scenes of Sandy Mackendrick's gorgous Ealing Comedy, THE MAGGIE were filmed in Glasgow. No squalor or gangsters in sight. Just the titular puffer ran aground beside the St. Andrew's Suspention Bridge. The same bridge is used at the end of AN ENGLISHMAN ABROAD, about the spy Guy Burgess's...

movie cameras

I've had many a similar experience, though one of my best Glasgow photo's came from a couple of kids in Gardener Street asking if I could take their picture. I shot it without really thinking, but the result was excellet. It gets even worse if you're using a film camera. If I had a penny for every t...

Al movie star

An old topic now, I know. I filmed "Al" busking in the Clydebank Shopping Centre back in 1988/89 (round about). He was miming to recorded music played on a ghetto blaster. I shot him on black and white Super 8 film (only about 20 seconds worth), and very odd looking he was too. If I ever g...
