Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Excellent Dave and sad to see it go.
Actually worked with a bloke who was one of the extra's in the film as he was at the school at the time.
You can see him in the background when they are all watching the lassie demonstrate her football skills.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

I have been working on a documentary film about Gregory's girl and as part of the project I was granted access to the high school on Friday. The keys were due to be handed over to the demolition crew at 5pm that night so this should be the last chance to get a look but we may get back in next week.

Amazing how much stuff is still in the school;

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Yes it's right at the end of the film - it is of course a fictional roadsign which is why the distances are out.

Where was that sign meant to be in the film?

Cumbernauld is not anywhere near 25miles to Edinburgh and far closer to Glasgow.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

The cinema building is still there, in the mid-late 80s it was turned into Moll Flanders which was a pub/restaurant though for some reason I never visited it, anyway it's now a religious coffee shop thing. I've got good memories of the old cinema, watching Grease twice once with the family and another with my pals, seeing Spiderman, and going with my mum to see Close Encounters of the Third Kind, only one screen but the film used to change regularly. In the flashback bit of the Cumbie News it was mentioned (probably 40? years ago) that they were building a cinema in an underground parking lot so it wasn't even originally there, they created it out of a car park 8O

Ah the Vineyard, the smell of the place was musky and mysterious, wine and cigars and sweeties all combining to create a high.

I can't remember the sports shop in the market hall but I do remember the record shop, rising sun records wasn't it? it was called something else beforehand, anyone remember the toy shop there? I bought the solution to the Rubiks cube there, didn't help at all.

There was a Tempelton and a Galbraiths, one was turned into a Presto.

Think someone mentioned the temporary shopping centre in a previous post, here's a pic of it among the remnants of the old Muirfield hamlet.

Loved Brian Miller's film footage. Was back in town for the first time in a while at the weekend and was saddened to hear of his passing. Further information on the featured Cumbernauld United/Celtic match can be found here:

I had no idea the old council offices were so expansive.
You'd never know they'd ever been there.

I did a yts scheme in the mid 80s in Cumbie House, and the CDC offices were a sizeable construction, in two floors in parts and it was possible to lose your bearings, the typing pool was the small office to the bottom right and to its left was planning where you could've seen the town centre plans which had the area now occupied by Tesco as designated for Marks and Sparks. I can only recall being in the big house a couple of times, there was an entrance from the car park into the portacabin offices, good times back then even if I didn't entirely agree at the time, half pints at the Nine Dragons being a highlight.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Hello everyone. It's been a while.

Loved seeing those new shots on Flickr ,again stirring my want to see the centre in it's entirety and original form.

I have recently checked the Scottish Screen Archive with a view to purchasing Cumbernauld: Town for Tommorrow but have discovered they now actually have the video up in full length, unlike the edited version seen in the library and YouTube copy. Here is the link, enjoy!:

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Funny how you mentioned that because when I was up shopping this morning and thought I'd see if I could get up there, it was the lift nearest Tesco on the right side of the two. It wouldn't light up when I pressed 4 either so decided just to go to the library instead but when I got off at 3 the lift indicated it was still going up presumably to 4. Couldn't get back in as people were going in at 3 and I've a very low embarrasment threshold and didn't want to look daft in front of others. By the way anyone know if the CDC social club is still open or has that been turned into offices too? should be able to get a decent view of the old chippy area from there.
As for the old level 1 bus stop, I think it got turned into a loading area, but the lift doesn't stop there anymore. Incidently wasn't there an old bus stop on the north side too that I think got wiped out when phase 4 opened, remember going there after seeing a film at the county.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

I enjoyed your video although like all these things it'll be more enjoyable looking back
on it in twenty years time to see whats changed.

Possibly the old centre will be gone by then - which will make your film even more interesting.

appleofglasgow wrote:Speaking of lifts, I went there on Saturday to take pictures of the lift that would take me to floor 4. Guess what...won't let me access it anymore. The feeling of annoyance was great. Got in and hit 4 and nothing lit up, just like the other lifts and then I hit it again and the doors shut, but didn't move, just the sequence the lift does when it thinks it's going no where. Absolutely gutted that I took that one time I got up for granted, and I had the p!ssing camera that day as well!. I just thought that the lift always let you up...

Possibly someone (at the centre) may have read your post where you said you'd accessed the 4th floor
and decided to ruin your return visit. Maybe someone on here (a member or a guest) read about your
exploits and decided to check it out too, got caught and they've now blown it for you(?)

Maybe not always a good idea to to announce your covert ops on a public forum.

Anyway I'm off to blow the shutter off mjw's tunnel. Shhh!

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

It must be the same flats at that height, look at the promo film http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-Oen9xMdaE at about 4.18 you can see them running past the original apartments though they don't go in, also the chippy can be seen at about 3.47 just above the running figures. Unfortunately the apartment level is probably now knackered remember they demolished part of it which included the ramps from the library level 3 up to the offices level 4 so the only way up there is by lift and if they happen to be all out at the same time...

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

mjw wrote:Even though up until quite recently I thought those offices were always such, aren't they the original apartments? I did a training course up there about 15 years back and inside they're like a split level villa with stairs just inside the front door that go up and down. Incidently there was a planning notice in the Cumbie News about 8-10 years ago wanting to convert them back into flats but nothing came of it, seems if you can't actually get into them now what's the point of keeping them? I hope when the day comes to knock it all down we get a chance to roam about reminiscing about lost features like the rooftop chippy that i think burned down in the early/mid 80s and the bricked up road tunnel under central way where you emerged in what became phase 4.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply.

I am completely unsure as to whether the original apartments were converted to offices, either way I really want to get up there.

Your description of a split level villa however is ringing distinct and loud alarm bells, I am sure that the 1970 film "Cumbernauld: Town for Tomorrow" includes a stretched out look-around scene of this very place. At the time I seen it I thought it may have been inside the flats but the fact there was stairs made me think not.

Please don't say "when the day comes to know it all down". Part of me really really REALLY hopes that someone can see the potential of the building. It's an absolute travesty that the rear was ever demolished to make way for that beige wall that is the Antonine. The original centre people seem to forget was designed by people all over the world, it won a world coveted architects award and people travelled from all around just to visit it and marvel at it. I know times change, but doesn't such merits ensure that such a building is kept? The problem as I have said before is people don't give a flying one about the place and so their treatment of it is further plummeting it into the abyss.

Where is the rooftop chippie? Is this Phase 1 territory? Is the road tunnel still there? What was Phase 4 and where is it on the map?

Anyone know any other forums where similar discussions are taking place?
