Re: Red Road demolition 10th June

Well caught, that first one! :) Seconded! The Burnside viewing party had a false start ( I slept in ) and gave up on trying to view from the south side due to poor visibility. Well caught, that first one! :) Thanks, but the credit really goes to the camera, I got a new Lumix FZ48 a wee while back a...

Re: Red Road demolition 10th June

the red road web site is saying there isnt a clear view of the demolition from anywhere outside the exclusion zone now. an attempt to keep people away? Edit: Mori already mentioned it oops I stay about 100 yards outside the exclusion zone on the map on page 1, I would have to agree that there will ...

Re: The Sensational Alex Harvey

My Uncle is long time colleague of Alex Harvey, Bill Patrick, who is still living in Glasgow and still going strong. I walked into Waterstone's earlier this year and spotted a book (Are Ye Dancin), which has Alex Harvey and his Soul Band on the cover, with Bill playing the saxophone. http://ecx.imag...

Re: auld glasgow songs

"Doon in the Wee Room Underneath the Stair" Used to popular among some of the older Petershill suppporters, due to the obvious Springburn connection in the lyrics. The lyrics below may not quite be what the Alexander Brothers and others have sung over the years, but these are the words as ...

Re: New Transport Museum at Riverside

I went to the new museum on Monday with my family. My Dad had already been last week and was suitably unimpressed, but I did go with an open mind. I came away thinking that although many things about the new museum are good, it could have been so much better. The building is visually very impressive...

Re: Springburn Park

I can vaguely remember being in the winter gardens in Springburn Park when I was a child, it is disgraceful what has been allowed to happen to the park. There have been some improvements carried out lately, partly down to the promptings of the Friends of Springburn Park. Their website can be found h...

http://www.playedinbritain.co.uk/assets/covers/played-in-glasgow.jpg Just finished reading this book, and would recommend it to anyone with a shared interest in sport and Glasgow's history. Covers everything from Football to Dovecots, Curling to Bowls, and has some fantastic pictures, old and new.

Re: Lost Football Grounds

Does anybody know where a Glasgow club/team? "Caledonian" played back in the 1880s, Falkirk played them, but all the report said was at Burnbank, Glasgow. http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/images/1880/1880020704.jpg Burnbank was Rangers first ground, which was situated just to the south ...

Re: Hidden Glasgow War Memorials.

Nice post HH, I attended Springburn College as it was when I was serving my time and have attended the annual Remembrance Day service a few times there. Another Springburn memorial is the altar in Lodge Kenmuir in Vulcan Street. http://i50.tinypic.com/2ymsxue.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/2rdapme.jpg h...

Re: Power Stations & Electricity Generation in Glasgow

Cell, I started in the council in August 1987, and although we would be working at Polmadie we were taken round the other 3 depots (Govan, Dawsholm and Easter Queenslie) as part of our induction. At that time the incinerator at Govan was still in use, but I have no idea when it would have stopped pr...

Re: Power Stations & Electricity Generation in Glasgow

CELL - As far as I know, Polmadie never produced electricity, I've worked there for nigh on 23 years and AFAIK the only refuse depot that ever generated leccy was the original Govan depot in Craigton Road.
