multi country pass for a month is £550 on rail europe, you may find it cheaper buying individual tickets. depends on how much you want to move around, i suppose. i think you pay extra for some high speed services with the inter rail pass too

looks like they're driven concrete piles http://www.fps.org.uk/pilinginfo/drivenpiling.php they will be trimmed to the correct level and transfer the load from whatever is going on top of them, road or bridge or whatever, through soft ground to firm natural ground. the firm ground may be really deep...
