Re: The Garngad

No-one has yet pointed Garngad was renamed 'Royston' in, I think, 1947 presumably to improve its image, although to my mind, it was a regular working class area with decent enough folk on the whole. I lived in a house on the Monkland Canal on the south side of it facing Garngad. We regularly had wee...

Re: Roman Glasgow/Cathures

I was beginning to think that I was up a blind alley with my concept of a Roman Fort as the origin of Glasgow until I found this web site 'pastmap.org.uk' It shows a Roman Road running North from Bothwellhaugh, via Tollcross Road, Duke Street then crossing Castle Street just Nrth of the Bell o' The ...

Robert Burn's love of a Glaasgow Lassie

I have just listened to a session , partly in Gaelic, from Nashville Tennessee of the songs of Robert Burns. I recorded it from BBC Alba yesterday and was moved to tears by a rendering of 'Ae Fond Kiss' in that language. Burns wrote the song to Nancy Macklehose ( previously Agnes Craig from the Salt...

Re: Roman Glasgow/Cathures

Thanks for that Edward, I had previously checked that site. Unfortunately there is little or no data on ancient Glasgow. By that I mean The High Street, Castle Street RottenRow etc. Yet there is a confirmed Roman Road heading towards Glasgow as far as a point beyond Bothwaellhaugh. Some 19C plans sh...

Re: Bing! (West Lothian)

No one seems to have mentioned yet,- 'The five fingers of Addiewell' This large bing had 5 tipping runs-there was a move in the 70s to have it 'listed' as a historical building. Don't think it progressed further. Also' Paraffin Young' who very much involved in the production of oil from shale for la...

Re: New Gurdwara on Berkeley Street

I would think the car park will be for general use when not used by the temple which would be attended noon Friday through to noon Sunday?
I has been my experience based on my surveys at a west London Gurdwara that the bulk of trips to it will be concentrated over the last half hour Sunday.

Re: Glasgow Blind Asylum

If the site is proposed for redevelopment, not simply conversion (which is unlikely), i would be very interested in any archaeological dig on this site which is in the heart of the ancient city. This should be obligatory in any-case under planning legislation.

Re: Crannogs on the Clyde

Hi HollowHorn, Yes there were causeways on the Clyde- Tidal Causeways obviously, but these may have been much older than the Romans who would have no doubt used them. The one I know of was Langbank to Dumbuck which, conveniently seems to have had a crannog at each end! The statistical accounts for S...

Re: New Gurdwara on Berkeley Street

I have carried out transport assessments and travel plans for several Gurdwaras in West London- one of which was for Afghan Sikhs These were largely self funded so building work in such cases may have been progressed at the rate funds were built up! Incidentally, I had contact with the architect for...

Re: Roman Glasgow/Cathures

Hi all, I would welcome any feedback from anyone even if it is that I am talking 'mince'! I started out on this in response to a comment from the city Council's own web site which states that a roman trading centre was located at Cathures (Old Glasgow) in about 80AD. However I cannot find where this...

Re: Thatched cottages

Very interesting Brian, I was beginning to think that my memory was giving me problems not unusual at my age! The photos do reveal something which may require some additional information,-the thickness of the thatch is not of the same as the traditional ones of the south and the ridge is not heavily...

Re: Buried chemical waste hazard

Yes it was waste from extraction of radium for medical use from 'pitchblend'. Apparently. there was a source of this mineral somewhere in Scotland. It would be interesting to find where, and also where the processing took place as this could simply be fly tipping until it was identified as potential...

Re: Buried chemical waste hazard

Re Soccaroo's comment about a desktop study of brownfield sites. My point was about chemical waste being dumped in a number of sites which I know about by numerous agencies over extensive areas. This is not information easily obtained by any desk-top study but only from local knowledge. Sites such a...

Thatched cottages

Does anyone remember the two thatched cottages on the south side of Edinburgh Road east of Carntyne? My recollection is that they were still there in the early 50s.
This always struck me as quite out of context with Glasgow's building types and weather.

Re: Crannogs on the Clyde

old forrest.docx Attached is the typical ancient tree stumps found on either side of the Thames and at many locations around the UK . Does anyone know of such old trees such as this on the Clyde? Many years ago when setting out a new layout at General Terminus in Govan, We found old timbers at abou...
