Re: Your most pointless subject at school was.....?

Yes ONC at Stow. Then HNC on day release but had to do extra maths at night as I thought I had a chance to get to uni. A long day 9am to 9.30pm. Talked to other old boys and those that did the 5 year apprenticeships seemed to have to work 1/2 day on Saturday. I did 8am to 12 noon. But it does seem t...

Re: Your most pointless subject at school was.....?

Latin a dead language. Goodness knows why. Was rubbish at it. Got told that all modern European languages derived from, latin thus if us blockheads learnt latin French/ Spanish/German would be easy. Never got to do any of them. Did tech drawing. Enjoyed it better than Latin!

Re: Quoit pitching ground

I remember being taken by an uncle to see Scotland play Wales at Quoits at Hardgate, Clydebank. It was in the summer of 1955, I think. The "ground" was at the back of where the post office was at the round a bout. The ground seemed to be very busy. A lot of men and very few women if I recal...

Re: Victoria Park Debachle

Wonder just what price increases are in the pipeline to use the velodrome, swimming pools, Scostoun, Gorbals etc etc. to help pay the games "debt" legacy.

Re: Steam Trucks in Glasgow

Used to see steam Sentinal lorries at work in the Aberdeen docks area in the early 1960s. Did Beardmores use them during the war 1940-45 or just after? I seem to recall seeing one or two of them at work around the Parkhead forge area. Not to be confused with the steam trains going across Duke Street

Re: Thank goodness for the CW games

We did a lot of rehearsals at Bellahouston before Celtic Park. The first dress rehearsal was very wet and the female ballet dancer was absolutely fearless. The male dancer had slipped a few times. A lot of the "cast" dancers were slipping. The first dress rehearsal the bit I was in was spo...

Re: Looking To Setup A Stall in Glasgow

Used to have a stall at the Barras but gave it up five years ago. Did not really pay. Ashton Lane area is not bad. Would not take a "stall" in certain "market areas". You get "sort" of tied into 6 months rent and sometimes 1 -2 months in advance. Then if you don't get e...

Re: Thank goodness for the CW games

Had an amazing time. I was in the opening ceremony cast plus did Clydesider shifts at the SECC. Apart from the "food" you cant get more than one banana! Plus the gut bustin cheese and ham rolls. One day bacon lettuce and tomato appeared! Gone in a few minutes never to reappear! There was a...

Re: Victoria Park Debachle

Parts of Maryhill Park are "neglected". Football pitches at Knightswood had some plan for 5 a side "complex" and I seem to
recall something about rugby. But they are just derelict a red shale area now. Perhaps neglected bits of parks and/or parks could be highlighted.

Re: Victoria Park Debachle

There are quite a few "parts of parks" in Glasgow like this part of Victoria Park being neglected. I wonder if the original owners who gave the land to the council or whoever it was at the time had any conditions written in. Maybe like, this is part of Glasgow "Common Good" and i...

Re: Commonwealth Games Uniform

If I recall there was a competition to design a games tartan which was won by someone at school in Glasgow. Is this tartan being used? I do know there are quite a lot of different uniforms being worn both as so called Clydesiders- hordes of people in red uniforms about in Glasgow to-day- games trans...
