Re: WWII "decoy city" near Torrance

I was out for a walk this weekend with the brother-in-law guided by the fantastic new "Archeology Around Glasgow" book recently published by Glasgow Museums. We started off at the Starfish decoy control bunker - it is near Torrance but closer to Milngavie. Some of the photos are really bad...

Re: The Montrose Bar

We used to have a couple of starters every Friday in The Montrose. It was a bit of a dive in those days.

Re: Manufacturer's plates and stanks seen in Glasgow

Great idea Cell - the essence of Hidden Glasgow. I had a wander on the way home tonight , and was amazed by the stuff I could not find! So many gullys have been stolen & replaced with new cast iron. It's a shame , but currently a problem due to the price of scrap iron. Albert Drive railway bridg...

Re: Glasgows Cobbled Streets and Lanes

This one is Butterfield Place in Port Eglinton. The cobbles are the "crazy pave" type which seem older than the usual geometric types ( any clues folks because I have not re-read this thread entirely , only for repetition?) Looking at the old OS maps , this street was originally part of Bu...

Re: Glasgows Cobbled Streets and Lanes

One of the remaining tenements in Broad Street will be burned into my memory forever. I was in my first day in a new job , being trained on the job , straddling the apex of the tenement roof - not a good place to be!! A slate roof can feel so insecure - bits move , it is slippy , and it's a long way...

Re: Pillar Boxes

Another Victorian survivor on Coplaw Street at the corner with Victoria Road. I used to walk past this post box twice a day and have even seen it on fire after someone torched it when it was over full near christmas. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3016/2575712479_2466da2249.jpg?v=0

Fat Cat - you were probably too young to remember (3?) , but do you have any family stories about your Broad Street home?

The area is well worth a visit.

Re: Glasgows Cobbled Streets and Lanes

Fordneuk Street in Bridgeton , North of Broad Street. Trackway for carts still in place. Perhaps salvaged trackway kerbs re-used at the edge of the asphalt? Interesting area - you can see the Camlachie Burn if you wander South , with a new aspect due to recent demolition. Didn't get a photograph unf...
