Nice one Norrie, the 1927 Glasgow directory lists P&R Fleming as "ironmongers, iron merchants, structural engineers, wire fence and gate manufacturers, and agricultural implement makers". They had their Kelvin works in Partick with warehouses elsewhere in the City. http://canmore.rcahm...
Get in touch with your landlord's emergency plumber. If you're a Housing Assoc tenant the number should be on their website or on info supplied to you by them during the year. Let them do the running and make the decisions about access etc. Emphasise you're getting water in and are worried about th...
What’s the story about who is liable for any costs (redecorating) associated with damage from a water leak from the privately owned flat above, do I have to claim my contents or my buildings insurance or can I claim anything from the owners above? If there is a water leak from the flat above and the...
Its near one of Glasgow's scarier nightspots. Would that be Joanna Dee’s, never been in it but it looks scary! http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/mm?hl=en&ll=55.856899,-4.201503&spn=0.000003,0.002486&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=55.856815,-4.201335&panoid=_7HCr31m0-Ko2Y4Intm4AA&...
While we are on the topic of farm machinery this is a good one from a company that I had never heard of. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8504/8313868631_cea518d316.jpg William Dickie and Sons manufactured wind powered machinery that pumped water and other agricultural equipment. Those of a certain age...
That wee diamond is a cracker Norrie, I’ll have to look out for one of those. Everywhere I go now I see those barn plates, I’m going to have to brass neck it and make friends with some farmers and see if they are willing to part with one.
Couldn’t resist having a go at some of these, thanks to iangr on the other place for the originals and inspiring me to get out with my camera and visit bits of Glasgow I wouldn’t normally get to. Good one Norrie, an engineering plate and a football stand, two of my favourite things! Now that you mention it, I’ve seen these enamel diamonds on barns but didn’t connect them with A&J Main. On a different tact, here is a plate I picked up recently, which was from one of the steam turbines use...
Thanks Norrie, I’ve added an “A & J Main” tag and a pin to a couple of the pictures. I also found out that they made tea drying sheds which helps explain what might have been exported to Nairobi and Calcutta.
Always good to see a bit of context so stick a sample of the barns up, but don’t turn the thread into farmers weekly! I didn’t realise that they made farm buildings but it makes sense given the type of structures they were producing. http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/springburn/springgir/springgirmai.htm...
