Re: Where is Glasgow?

Glasgow is a unitary authority - a 'city county' if you will - effectively split out from former Lanarkshire territory.

South of the border, people still say that Manchester is in Lancashire, Birmingham is in Warwickshre, and maybe even that London is in Middlesex!

Re: Conversion & extension of Telfer House, Miller S

Oh look... another hotel development in central Glasgow.. http://www.urbanrealm.com/news/5360/Work_gets_underway_on_city_centre_Ibis_Hotel.html I remember many, many years ago (OK 20.... it was 1994) there was a second hand academic book dealer in Telfer House - freshers at Strathclyde were always ...

Re: Does Glasgow need new shops?

What's needed is better quality shops on the high street - not in the malls. I lament all the pound shops and discount stores that have devalued Argyle and Sauchiehall Street. Blame the Galleries and the St Enoch Centre if you will, but its part of a national trend I'm afraid. However, in Glasgow's ...

Re: Alexander Turnbull Bldg (Strachlyde Uni) Conversion

Before Strathclyde Uni bought the building back in 1975 it had been the offices of a tobacco company originally - does anyone know anything more about this??

Re: Conversion & extension of Telfer House, Miller S

Agree with comment on whether Premier Inn is indeed still 'budget'. My impression in the events sector over the past couple of years is that Premier Inn seem to have moved increasingly into that and that may be influencing their pricing strategy. Caveat on 'moved increasingly into', as it's probabl...

Re: Tower Block Demolitions - Rolling Updates!

I read somewhere that the remaining occupied Red Road tower (33 Petershill Drive) is now empty...so I presume that means they will start stripping the asbestos out from it soon, if it hasn't already started. The blocks they've already done will come down in the summer apparently. Remains to be seen ...

Re: Glasgow department stores

you will find Reid & Todd mentioned a few times here: http://www.glasgowhistory.com/sauchiehall-street.html Mentioned in that article too was the fact that Pettigrew and Stephens, across from Reid and Todd's, was designed by John Honeyman and John Keppie and with a cupola by Charles Rennie Mack...

Re: New Hotel Crystal palace Jamaica St

BTW on boy racers I was at a business do in a hotel in the Douglas Street, Pitt Street area. When we came out late the streets were awash with boys racers. Emissions pollution levels must have off the table, and I'd emphasise 'racers'. Ironic that the big polis shop is just round the corner. Even m...

Re: Conversion & extension of Telfer House, Miller S

I use Ibis hotels all the time in my travels across the UK and France, and have no complaints. Ibis Styles is an acronym for a normal Ibis, like the one in West Regent Street, with weird interior design - you'll either love it or hate it - with a price to pay for it :? Agreed - I've stayed in the i...

Re: Crocket is to close

Another independent bites the dust. It's a shame that these family owned businesses are disappearing, because they become an institution over the decades. Yes Crocket's was dear, no doubt about that but it was one of those places where you could find stuff that wasn't the usual generic chain store m...

Re: Lost Retail Chains

The name "Dunn" got me thinking - what happened to Dunn & Co - the tailors; think they were on Buchanan Street or down that way near Fraser's. When did they close down?

Re: Tower Block Demolitions - Rolling Updates!

You have to wonder what the cost difference is between doing it this way, and ye old fashioned method: i.e blowing it down with explosives. It's more dissassembly rather than demolition.

But I suspect it's costing GHA a pretty penny...! :(

Re: You know you're getting old when.....

you start getting cynical about the festive season in general. So true. I actually hate it. Am going abroad for some sun next time. Once it's all over I'm usually checking the flower beds every day for the first sign of daffodil shoots poking through and for Tesco to start stocking easter eggs, bar...
