Re: Let Glasgow Flourish- Coat Of Arms

The very same. It's a beautiful piece of workmanship, actually.

Re: Helicopter crash on Clutha Vaults

Island bar near the middle, layout-wise.

I heard somebody on the radio saying she'd been inside when it happened and that the ceiling didn't collapse all at once, so it may indeed look worse than it is. Hopefully that's the case.

Re: Helicopter crash on Clutha Vaults

It's not really the kind of headline you expect to see.

Re: Edinburgh

It's well worth a look if you're in the neighbourhood at the right time. Not very far up the road, Regent Bridge (or Regent Arch if you feel like it) was built from 1815 to 1819, designed by Archibald Elliott with engineering guidance by Robert Stevenson (of lighthouse and Robert-Loui's-Grandad fame...

Re: Staglieno

Ha! That's fantastic stuff. I'd love one of those t-shirts.

Re: Finnieston crane

It's not the Finnieston one, but RCAHMS has a drawing of the Clydebank titan crane at least. They've got a copy online, and you'd no doubt be able to order a hi res version.

Re: Bing! (West Lothian)

FAO cell, a 1906 issue of The Engineer with a write-up about newly-installed electrical plant in a Pumpherston shale mine. Complete with some nice photos: http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/5/53/Er19060413b.pdf (And yon Grace's Guide is rather good; I've been rooting around in it for much of the da...

Re: Parking at Scottish Hydro Arena Glasgow.

Tis an interesting angle, but I'm not so sure about it doing damage to the wider music scene. I would've thought the bands that play the SHAG would've been playing the SECC instead, so there's not necessarily any loss? And a possible gain, as the new place might actually have decent acoustics.

Re: Petrochemicals from Linn Park

Haud on, what confirmation? If you're going by the fact that there are similar structures around Broxburn, and the shale oil industry once existed there, therefore it's a retort, then you're on the wrong track. There may well be similar looking structures around Broxburn, particularly by the canal, ...

Re: Petrochemicals from Linn Park

I'd love to be proved wrong too, but I suspect BTJustice has it. http://www.scotcities.com/cathcart/linnpark_expert1.gif I lived most of my life two miles from Broxburn and have never seen a retort. I did look quite hard! There are plenty structures by the Union Canal, and many of them to do with th...

Re: Petrochemicals from Linn Park

Nice link, Mr Pool. It's a curious thing for sure, and the good Dr raises a couple of good points: it does look like concrete to me too I’m afraid, and you’d expect to see cavities inside. Plus, going by the diagram, that looks too close to the surface to be the distillation column. More photos woul...
