Re: The Garngad

Worked in the Caley in late 50s. Took the bus along Royston Road and walked up a hill past the steamie
to get into the works. There was an ash football pitch which I recall playing footie on. There were
multi story flats being constructed. In the winter the fog was pretty bad!

Re: An extinct job?

A relative in the 1940s had a similar job to a ticket writer. He started off as a shop "ticket writer" but in the late 1940s and 1950s did painted posters to advertise what cinemas were showing. These were hand drawn and then coloured in on a large table. It was more the "city & s...

Re: Bennie's Rail Plane

The wooden hut in the timber yard opposite the Burnbrae is all that's left. It was a railway goods parcel receiving office at one time.

Re: One for the railway heads

Thanks Gap. I recall seeing this but was not sure if this was the "final" plan. Seems a sensible idea.

Re: What Street Is This?

Used to walk along that street to collect parcels sent by rail from Stranraer/ Dumfries in the parcels office which was in a sort of dingy office at the far end of the St Enoch Hotel. Our younger contributors may not know that there was a thriving parcels railway business. You put the parcel in the ...

Re: Auld Glesga Trams & Buses

Hi Eddy. I drive down this to work as I can turn right along South Street! The Heart of Scotstoun community café is just beyond the bridge on the right hand side. Albion are now in the old Harland and Wolf shipyard building.

Re: Maryhill Tree in Chimney

I thought McLachlans had a place at Parkhead Cross. Down a wee road just off the Gallogate on the left just before
Duke Street. The road ran round to Duke Street. McLachlans Beer -Clean and Clear -advertising slogan.

Re: Old Army camp in Pollok

I have been reading a transcript of an ex German POW's time in the Glasgow area. He mentions friends from the Netherhouse Camp. In his article he says that some of the POWs at Netherhouse were ex Afrika Korps men who had been transferred to the USA. In 1945 they were shipped back from the US to Neth...

Re: Old Army camp in Pollok

I have just found an article by a German POW re POW Camps in the Glasgow area. Camp 188 was in Johnston. Seems there were smaller "Satellite" camps mainly in old army camps. He talks about an Italian camp at Duntocher. He talks about after the war ended working on a housing development in ...

Re: An extinct job?

I had a relative who was a "cousieman" in the 1881 census. Extinct job. He put the coal hutches on to a cable going downhill in a mine and disconnected the tubs or hutches when they came up the hill full of coal inside the mine.

Re: One for the railway heads

Any thoughts on Serco taking over the West Highland sleeper on 1st April? Currently it rumbles into Dalmuir with a DB Class 67 crewed by Scotrail. Word on the "line" is that Serco may have to use Class 47's for a few months crewed by? Until they have their own motive power sorted. Maybe hi...
