Hey, I quite like the St. Enoch Centre. So many people seem to hate it. Maybe it's just me. Pity about all the shops though. Get rid of them and the place would look even better.

Agree about the Buchanan Galleries though. Boring!!

What's happened to the Mitre Bar by the way? Felt like popping in there the other week and found it was all shut up. Used to visit it regularly a number of years ago. It was a nice wee pub. Most disappointed.

It was a very long time ago and I can't really remember. In fact I had completely forgotten about the large window above the loading bay. My feeling is that the whole building was part of the warehousing/despatch operation at the factory. On the other hand maybe it was part of the design department....

I worked for James Templeton for a short while anno 1968 and I remember that the modern building which eventually became Marcos Leisure Centre was at that time the factory's despatch department. The carpets were warehoused and sent out from there. The entrance to the leisure centre was then the load...

These posts reminded me of the Polish enclave in St. Peter's Cemetery, not far from the main gate. I wonder how many people [still] know it is there. It is mostly Polish ex-servicemen who lie buried there and it is a very poignant place. I imagine there are not very many of them left now - a piece o...

Does anybody know why part of the canting basin was filled in a while ago, at the south end? Presumably the terrain created is also earmarked for development of some kind or whoever arranged this wouldn't have gone to so much trouble and expense.

Not exactly central so I'm not sure if it counts [although it's within the city boundary] but one of my favourite buildings is the Burrell Collection. I know next to nothing about architecture but I think it looks great what with all that glass combined with pink sandstone and it's a welcoming build...

The Variety Bar wasn't originally Art Deco of course. It was just refurbished in that particular style a number of years ago. It hasn't been a pub all that long either. It was originally a tailor's shop [Carswells I think], then it became the Kings Arms, in the early 1970's it was renamed The Norsk ...

Different picture but the same location and [I think] the same 8 vans lined up, but taken from a slightly different angle and a bit more close up.

Happened to be in Hillhead at lunchtime so popped into the library there and found a pictorial history of Albion Motors. It contains a picture showing a line-up of these Castlebank Laundry vans and the caption confirms that Holland Coachcraft made the bodies, however it states that the company was b...

There used to be a large laundry near Anniesland Cross called the Castlebank Laundry which operated a fleet of distinctive streamlined vans during the 1930's. Maybe they were built by this company. I came across a picture of these vans about a year ago - can't offhand remember the name of the book b...
