Re: The Real Glasgow Conspiracy

A friend of mine grew up near London in the 60s, and she's told me her dad took her up to Glasgow at the time (I can't remember why). Said she'd never seen poverty like that before, and it scared the bejeezus out of her. At the risk of wandering off-topic, but hopefully giving a bit of context, Edin...

Re: The Real Glasgow Conspiracy

Hey Cochrane, cheers for raising this again, I thought I'd managed to kill this thread stone dead  Thinking back, I guess I meant exactly what Josef said, the point being it prejudices any research into this kind of subject. Which is not to say they didn't have it in for Glasgow... As you s...

Re: Clyde Bridges

I can't vouch for the Kingston Bridge, but a few years ago they had to strengthen the towers on the Forth Road Bridge and replace all the hangers, because of those huge traffic levels that it wasn't designed for. I'm sure the monster-sized lorries of the past few years really don't help. Last I hear...

Re: Clyde Bridges

Hardly a quick fix indeed... I guess they'll have to replace all of them. What happened? £20.8 million and they bought the cables from Lidl?

It's iconic, it's radical, it's got a bit of a problem :? :

Re: Happy Christmas

Ok, in all-inclusive style: merry Christmas / Xmas / almost Solstice / approximate Saturnalia / Tuesday / whatever day it is according to the Julian calendar / nearly Hogmanay / no such thing as Hogmanay cos it's all an SNP conspiracy / whatever, man, treat it as a blessed couple of fucking days off...

Re: Radio 1 censors Fairytale of New York

I really really don't like the 'other F-word', and have good reason not to if you get my drift, but for feck's sake it's only a song and it's pretty obviously not meant maliciously. I'm far more offended by the spectacle of some feeble-minded, patronising git acting as moral arbiter than I am by wha...

Re: Favourite Poems about Glasgow?

It's only partly about Glasgow, but 'Glasgow, 1960' by Hugh MacDiarmid is a wee gem. I don't know about the legality or otherwise of posting it here, but I guess a mod can take it down if it's really not ok. It was published in 1935 by the way... Returning to Glasgow after long exile Nothing seemed ...

Re: 3rd Reich past-present

That looks like an astonishing place, PK. I always fancied a Luger when I was a kid. Full marks to the writer for sneaking 'tenebrous' and 'conniptions' into an article too.
