Re: Glasgow railways... if..

Meh - Someone playing with graphics whithout stopping to think about the practicalities of building a transport system. It has all the usual shortcomings, tunneling under Glasgow is not like London, the eastern circle of the underground would be a nightmare to build, no integration with long distanc...

Re: Model Railways and other Wee Worlds

Hi al - star of the Model Railway Exhibition at the SECC was this little gem from Greenock Model Railway Club, it is based on Kilbowie Station at Clydebank, plenty of little Glasgow cameos to be seen. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8666/16405588947_95c69f551b_c.jpg Model Rail Scotland 2015 011 by Lo...

Re: One for the railway heads

Mac I am loving that lost shot in your Fort William sequence absolutely terrific John And also unusual. As well as being double-headed with a pair of beautiful Black 5s, the train is 'double-braked', with two brake coaches up front: usually, there would be one at the front and one at the rear. Thes...

Re: Danger from old mines and mineshafts

I know that all new houses built in mining affected areas since the 1970s need to be built on raft foundations, which is effectively a thick flat concrete base. The Sikeside area of Coatbridge was badly affected by subsidence in the 1980s and the five storey high maisonettes built in the 1960s all h...

Re: One for the railway heads

The Scottish Railway Preservation Society have taken under their wing a very important piece of Glasgow Railway Engineering History, the fully working NBL MAN L12V18/21 diesel engine was originally fitted to a class 21 (type 2) locomotive built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. And...

Re: Your most pointless subject at school was.....?

Botanic Squirrel wrote:Technical Drawing. I mean, how does that even qualify as a subject??

Depends on your career choices, study Tech Drawing, become a draughtsman or design engineer and build useful things. Engineering Science is the practical side of Physics, which is very theoretical. I got a Higher in all three.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

The University of Sheffield has just put online four thousand photos of Britain in the 60s and 70s. They were the collection of JR James, Chief Planner at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government in the 1960s, later Proferssor of Town and Regional Planning at Sheffield. There are a lot of maps a...

Re: River Clyde's Seven previous Islands

An interesting modern version of this was used at Dawlish where the coastal railway was washed away last winter, as a temporary breakwater, standard ISO containers filled with rubble were used while the sea wall was rebuilt behind

Re: Big fire?

I don't buy the "accidental" fire excuse as you have to make a determined effort to start rubber burning, it takes a lot of heat, however once it is started it will develop rapidly. So some form of accelerant was used (petrol most likely), that has got to be deliberate.

Noticed that the ole on the Rutherglen-Whifflet line is up (using the new omnia system). Anybody know how the new electrified service will integrate into the existing timetable?
