Re: What Are You Currently Reading

On the Natural History of Destruction by W G Sebald. Being an essay about Germany's and especially German literature's failure to speak of the utter destruction of its cities during the Second World War, apparently. Cheerful. I'll tell you how it goes.

Whoever contributes, I hope the photo pairs are better lined up than in the Edinburgh one. Bitchy, moi? True, though.

Re: Edinburgh

A couple of Leith murals. According to Mr Edinphoto the second one was done in 1986 by Street Artworks , being two fellas Tim Chalk and Paul Grime, being a painted version of the stories from a community history project of the previous year. Re: 'The Secret History of Our Streets' in Scotland

Moray Place is weird. Interesting choice for a programme. (The gardens behind it to the north are one of my favourite bits of the planet, incidentally.)

Re: Edinburgh

Poirot and friends! That's a cracker - they look so happy.

The Crags one's a belter too. Spot the old Dumbiedykes closest to the camera. Also, I understand that the Clean Air Act was of course A Good Thing, but dammit, city photos have never been quite as atmospheric since.

Re: Travelling from Glasgow before the Railway Age

Good stuff, Anorak. There's a part of Dickens' The Uncommercial Traveller that's always stuck with me, where he describes the coaching inns in provincial England at the point where they were just about to finally keel over and die out due to the railways. Worth a read, as I recall, though not quite...
