Re: Power Stations & Electricity Generation in Glasgow

It’s not often I come across a Glasgow power station that I didn’t know about, but I’ve just found the “Carntyne Electric Works” marked on the 1892 OS 25” to the mile map. http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch-2nd-and-later/view/?jp2=82891770#zoom=5&lat=2765&lon=15692&layers=BT It seems to have b...

Re: Manufacturer's plates and stanks seen in Glasgow

Good ones Norrie and Mungo Dundas John Deas & Co may still be in existence, I came across a John Deas & Co, manufacturer of machinery for food, beverage and tobacco processing at Dobbies Loan and Robert Pool has some old adverts on his flickr site but the address is different. http://www.fli...

Re: Orkney

I would recommend Stromness as a place to stay, I thought it was much nicer than Kirkwall and still had a good critical mass of pubs, shops and places to eat, great wee museum with a whole folder dedicated to the Orkney big brother winner, they are very proud of him! You can walk out of Stromness an...

Re: random question

I only recently learned that Scran can be accessed for free with some councils' library cards. (Tough if you're not in one of the particular council areas, sadly. Mind you, it's by no means impossible to get a library card from a council area you don't live in.) http://www.scran.ac.uk/login/library...

Re: Queen St Station Quarry

This 1832 map might be of interest, it shows the quarries and "proposed street" which threw me for a bit.

Re: Manufacturer's plates and stanks seen in Glasgow

Thanks Eggman and Banjo, excellent bit of additional info, I like the idea of naming streets after local people who have contributed to the local community, helps keep their memory alive.

Re: Manufacturer's plates and stanks seen in Glasgow

Always nice to do one of these and find the company is still going strong, these two come from pumps made by Dawson & Downie, a Clydebank company. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8464/8420269478_90c2156dbc.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8420272080_4b52ce522f.jpg The following is a potted h...

Re: Am I the only one?

Embarrassing no, I think someone didn’t bother to watch the whole episode before broadcasting it. As for destroying it, that seems a bit of an overreaction, are we going to destroy every reference to him (and buildings as well for that measure!) and will this help any of his victims or is it just to...

Re: Manufacturer's plates and stanks seen in Glasgow

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8045/8397976141_0cc97dc57d.jpg I believe this plate comes from a compressor for a refrigeration unit. Louis Sterne was an American who set up a business in 1874 making emery wheels, emery grinding machines and railway springs. The company later diversified into refrige...
