Re: Empire Exhibition cigarette cards

That's a super collection you have there Robert. Admiring all of the items in your collection was enjpoyable. I don't have a solitary souvenir, only my memories of it. Great post!

Re: Empire Exhibition cigarette cards

I recall these cigarette cards very well. These Exhibition cards were difficult to obtain because not many people in Glasgow smoked Mitchell's cigarettes. I collected them, but was never able to finish the set. I only knew one man who smoked them, a Mr. Tait, a barber on Elder St. Govan. In those da...

Re: WWII Stuff

There were a number of decoy airfields set up along the coast and some were eventually made fully operational and used to train fighter squadrons during the Battle of Britain. There is a particularly well preserved at Hatton between Carnoustie and Arbroath. The reason it is so well preserved is that ...

Re: Glasgow's Cycling Heritage

Yes, that's a great picture of Reg Harris and I'm pretty sure it's the one on which the statue at the Manchester Velodrome is fashioned. Like you Floweredpig, I've never heard of South of France pattern handlebars as mentioned by Lucky Poet, and the bars in the picture were known, as you say, simply...

Re: WWII Stuff

I had a look at your sites Floweredpig, and they give some great shots of Scotland's East coast defences. Yes, they didn't just have something to do with the threat of invasion from Norway, they were all about the threat of invasion from Norway. Well, they may well also have had something to do with...

Re: WWII Stuff

'Anyway, here's an Enigma machine seen in the NMS, posted here cos it seems like the most fitting place:"
Great pictures Lucky Poet, and i think you posted it on the correct thread. Needlesstosay, the enigma had a great deal to do with WWII.

Re: WWII Stuff

Howdy Dugald,An invasion does seem unlikely considering the troops etc. stationed around the area. But one wonders if a raiding party perhaps attacked some secret and strategic installation. This is all neccessarily vague as I'm making it up as I go along. :) But a radar station would be worth raid...

Re: WWII Stuff

On a completely unrelated topic, I wonder if anybody can help clear up a little mystery. A few years back, I was told by an ex Special Policeman that Scotland, possibly Montrose, was invaded by the Germans. I've never found out if this was true or not. Has anyone else heard about this and, if so, d...

Re: New Bridge

I have only seen pictures of the new bridge, but I don't ever recall a time in my life when I didn't know of the name Parsonage and its association with the morbid, but necessary job, on the River Clyde. I think it would be brilliant and deserving, to name the new bridge after these Clyde Parsonages .

Re: Taxed to Death

" And the narrator pronounced it 'apart-height' when it's 'apart-HATE'. " Ted, I'm not so sure the narrator has it wrong. I just checked the pronunciation on a voice dictionary, and the word was pronounced ' apart-height' . This is how I have always thought apartheid was pronounced. Who kn...

Re: Glasgow's Cycling Heritage

Enjoyed reading your post Cyclo. Great stuff about Harris. Although I had never heard of a frame bearing his name I had of course heard lots about Harris. I saw him at Ibrox Stadium in 1950 when he was part of a group of European track riders who were touring the major cities in the U.K. I enjoyed t...

You know Mori, the one thing Govan doesn't seem to lack are magnificent artists impressions of what Govan is going to look like. When i wonder, will they get cracking and make some of these great impressions a reality.

Re: Glasgow's Cycling Heritage

So, Dugald, Sharon & LP, how do we get people interested in an annual Pedal Power Project race-day from D&G to Glasgow , without going through the same rig-ma-roll (ending up with no interest) of previous failing projects? It's either a good idea or a bad idea. It either needs to be promote...

Dumfries & Galloway http://www.originalbicyclefestival.co.uk/ Thanks a lot Dugald (I think). I Googled - Glasgow "Habble" - to see what you were talking about: Urban Dictionary: habble rabble ... habble rabble - 1 definition - The meaningless rambling often associated with elderly hist...
