Re: Glasgow Graveyards

An appropriate picture in this centenary year of the sinking of RMS Titanic on 15th April 1912: this stone in Craigton Cemetery commemorates the Rev. John Harper, who went down with the ship. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/jozefK/craigton/jharper1.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/j...

Re: Ships pics

But a Styx can also be a river or spring nymph and I think that is more likely to be the association in this instance.

Re: Login problems.

Many thanks for your response, Sharon. I am using Safari version 5.1.5 This is the most up to date version according to Apple's website. My operating system is Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.8. Again, this appears to be the most up to date version of Snow Leopard. Of course you can now get the ...

Re: Login problems.

This is a problem I have had for a while but since it hasn't stopped me posting I haven't brought it to anybody's attention until now, although it is a bit of a nuisance: I can no longer see my User Control Panel, in fact the grey section at the top (beneath Board Index) is completely blank as regar...

Re: Hyndland Cobblers!

What's wrong with the cobblers on Merkland Street? I've used them several times without cause for complaint. Is it just because they use staples? I suppose they all do that nowadays. There's also a cobblers in Shawlands, on Kilmarnock Road just at Pollokshaws East Station. Supposed to have a good re...

Re: Are the tenements on Colebrooke St leaning backwards ?

Glasgow Academy has bought those tenements and will be demolishing them to build a new science building on the site. I didn't know that, but it doesn't really surprise me. The Academy already has the top half of Colebrooke Street, which also used to be residential. No doubt they got these tenements...

Re: Are the tenements on Colebrooke St leaning backwards ?

It is not an illusion. There is serious subsidence in this particular area, caused apparently by ancient mineworkings going back to the late 18th / early 19th C. It has been a problem for years. The tenement on Great Western Road went first, followed about twenty years ago by the terraced houses at ...

Re: Lost Car Dealerships

I can remember SMT on Finnieston street, where my Dad bought a Mk1 Astra There was also an SMT place on New City Road at Cowcaddens, next to what used to be the old Normal School. My eldest sister worked there in the late 1960's / early 1970's. The Chinatown Restaurant is there now, in fact I think...

Re: Ibroxholm Oval Demolition

Must say I was pretty much astonished last year when I found out that the Ibroxholm flats were to be demolished. The blocks were built in the 1960's to a pretty high standard on the site of what had originally been a prestigious villa development in the kind of central location many people would reg...

Re: Old Cars etc Spotted

Had a fairly cursory look at it as I was walking past. Didn't look as if it had been driven for quite a while and the interior was a bit of a mess. I wonder if somebody bought it as a restoration project without realising the time and expense involved. That certainly wouldn't be a first.

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

Came across this stone in Craigton cemetery, commemorating four of the victims of the bombing at Govan Road, Linthouse on 13th March 1941, when a landmine missed the engineering department at the Stephens shipbuilding yard and hit the tenement opposite - all members of one family. http://i41.photobu...

Re: New Transport Museum at Riverside

Went along this afternoon just to get a feel of the place. As expected it was heaving with people, mostly families with kids, so close examination of the exhibits was pretty well impossible. I used to be a regular visitor not just to the old Transport Museum at the Kelvin Hall but also to the origin...
