Re: Subway today

The system, which was completed in 1896, was originally constructed and operated by the Glasgow District Subway Company which is why it was referred to as the Subway. In 1923 Glasgow Corporation took it over. At that time it was still a cable operated system. The Corporation closed it temporarily in...

Re: 1937 Lawrence Street Mass Murder

I recorded this R3 feature at the time on an old fashioned cassette tape, which I still have, in case anybody wants to borrow it. This tragic tale was unknown to me before I heard the programme. I hadn't come across it in any of the usual books about Glasgow murders, probably because the case never ...

It's the St. Mungo Halls. I've just seen a thumbnail picture of it on SCRAN.

Re: Can you identify this place

These are indeed the Queen Elizabeth Square flats designed by Basil Spence and demolished I think around 20 years ago. But as for the building on the right being St. Francis Church, that doesn't seem quite right to me. My feeling is that it is a building which once stood on the corner of Moffat St. ...

Re: Drumlins

Not all drumlins have the suffix "hill", in fact some of them don't even have individual names at all. The Mosspark housing scheme is built on and around a drumlin and there is one running right through the middle of Bellahouston Park. They all seem to have a characteristic shape, created ...

Re: OLD CHURCH ON POLOKSHAWS ROAD..NOW FLATS NEAR ALLISON STREET

Originally Strathbungo Parish Church, built 1886-7. The architects were McKissack & Rowan. That's more or less all I know about it, although I remember it being derelict and used to wonder whether it would survive.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/4566473572_23cf672487.jpg I walked past there on Wednesday morning and didn't see these snail tracks so they must have appeared within the last couple of days. Looks like somebody's been making a series of perambulations carrying leaking pots of paint (maybe they...

Re: Glasgow Graveyards

I was intrigued by this headstone in Craigton Cemetery, my attention caught not just by the sad demise of Thomas Fletcher in January 1936 but also by the inscription at the bottom of the stone, which seems to indicate an act of extreme altruism on his part. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/joz...
