Re: Calling all Glasgow Newshounds!

I have been following this discussion and I must say I see absolutely nothing wrong with froufrou's introductory post. A young fellow steps into this arena and asks for help right of the bat? ( I thought about it for a long time before I stepped into it!). What's wrong with that? As far as I can see...

Re: Wartime Glasgow--Excluding bombing.

Phew! PK, that's a relief. I had to go back and reread some of the old postings to check out which name I had used when i introduced the topic... happily I used Arandora Star , the correct name as you point out. There was I not long after having corrected another fossil, a really old fossil, on a po...

Re: Wartime Glasgow--Excluding bombing.

[ 8O You of all people Dugald should have no objection to the Memorial for the Andorra Star, perhaps that is why you really left the discussion? There's already numerous memorials dotted about the place for this ship.....and if it worries you that much then you might at least show your own wee bit ...

Re: Old Medals

I don't think the coins are " thruppenie bits " (note the pronunciation!). I'd guess they are " tanners " Peter, I'm not quite in agreement with PK, I think the medals are worth something. Yes, we'd have to define the meaning of "worth". The service stars are not quite ...

Re: Lost Football Grounds

Mori, I had a good look at the older of the two pictures you posted and I'm not sure if the ground you refer to as the " old St Anthony's FC ground ." is the one to which you are referring. The old St Anthony's FC ground is barely visible in the picture on the east side of Helen St. somewh...

Re: Wartime Glasgow--Excluding bombing.

CS, I cannot help you specifically, but I am aware of the sort of place your friend is talking about. In 1945 during the closing days of the war a number of displaced people were brought to the UK from Western Europe and some were housed around the Glasgow area in makeshift camps, as well as a lot o...

Re: Old Medals

Yes Peter, and a quick and simple answer to your question is yes, they're worth something. How much are they worth ? I don't know, but most of the medals are simply general service medals for both WWI and WWII, and are worth only a nominal amount. I have no idea what the big star at the top is. The ...

Re: Wartime Glasgow--Excluding bombing.

You're definitely in the correct thread VT, this does deal with Glasgow's military history. I don't recall this building at all, but there appears to be little doubt that it was a military drill hall. Only the part of the building that looks like the main entrance has the customary look of a drill h...

Re: WWII Stuff

Hi Guys My father past away a few years ago, never talking of his experience in the war, Iknow he was an acting Captain with the Seaforth Highlanders when they went to North West Europe in 1944, 1 month, returning for 3 months in 1946, He was John Hughes Adam. Re: Driving in the Dear Green Place.

A very interesting post Mori. Based on the information included in the Times article, I see a number of problems involved with the scheme. Well, with organisational problems anyway. The first of course is who pays the £1.8million cost? Will the money come from property school taxes? What will depriv...

Re: The Clyde ferries

Anorak, great maps! Your second & third maps, the coloured ones, show the ferry locations exactly as I recall them: the Whiteinch Ferry, right at the foot of Holm St. I have never heard of a ferry at Holmfauld Road in Linthouse ( its location is exactly where I'd say the Whiteinch Ferry was loca...

Re: The Clyde ferries

P.S Is my memory playing tricks or was there another ferry even further to the west that crossed the Clyde somewhere around Partick, but not as far west as Yoker ? Yes Tombro, there was another ferry further west than the Govan Cross Ferry. There was the Whiteinch Ferry, just a hop skip and a jump ...
