Re: George Square - removal of statues - objections

At this rate, we're one Emergency Council Planning Meeting away from having a Pat Lally column in the middle of the newly renamed David Tennant Square... Interesting that most of those designs keep Walter Scott's column there. I'm a little disappointed. I was planning on finding a good vantage poin...

Re: Tenements with Lifts

A lift would be perfect in our close. The stairs from one floor to another go up 3 sides so there is a large square space in the middle. There is a woman on the third floor who has been housebound for several years now :( That's a shame. I have never really been in a close with the central gap, alw...

Re: Tenements with Lifts

Thats why all the houses in Amsterdam either slope forward from the base or are stepped at each floor - to ease the hoisting of things to top floor without bashing on the walls.... Great idea. One of the reasons I would love to live in a hay shed or barn is to have an excuse for that sort of feature...

Re: Tenements with Lifts

Very interesting and the point I made earlier about the growing numbers of people getting on a bit and how the tenements will not be suitable accommodation is rather a sad one. I would even go further and say that my generation and the future ones will have more problems because i don't think, in g...

Re: Tenement Life

Here's one for the HG hive mind - all opinions, factoids, personal experiences, friend-of-a-friend stories welcome, anything no matter how vaguely related, please help! Our flat is one of four up the stairs on a trad tenement building. The building has two main door flats, which both have ground fl...

Re: Tenements with Lifts

I was just about to respond about the window entry problem of blocking the other residents windows too! Generally, adding a passenger lift, even a small one, to the outside of a traditional tenement building will be hugely problematic for many reasons: 1. Is your tenement a listed building? 2. Is it...

Re: Buses Today

Happens frequently, most often due to the bus being full, usually the case if you can see passengers aboard. If that was the case the driver cannot stop, and let more on due to overloading laws. I did once try to be helpful and explain to a group of intending passengers that the bus was full and th...

Re: Self Storage

I used Absolute out at Shawfield just last weekend. It is good. Very clean place, in good order. Facilities fine and the people are helpful. Only drawback was it wasnt open for long at the weekend - 10 - 2 saturday and sunday and only 6 weekdays. Took its toll unloading everything, but the place was...

Re: Lion Chambers??

LionChambersfw.jpg As above what could go wrong ?? These sort of shops absolutely disgust me. Set up for a short period either Christmas or fireworks night, zero consideration to designed shop frontage, poorly constructed, shabby looking. Posters stuck on the wall advertising their shite, and immed...

Re: More of Glasgow falls down

Nice update - great to see the detail of the bay. I had thought after your first pic that the bay support was steel/iron but now it looks like a timber ring beam...

Very interesting. Keep them coming!

Re: More of Glasgow falls down

Ibrox Street (Cessnock end) today: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8469/8119178656_edfc3d2e84.jpg I'm told it started yesterday when a piece of masonry fell from the top floor. Then a giant cherry picker turned up (cue Jaws music). A dreadful warning to do the damned maintenance........ Did you take ...

Re: Smoking in closes

Kirsty, is it my close you are talking about by any chance? Got a downstairs neighbour who smokes on the half landing. I can smell it coming in to my flat on the floor above, in to the kitchen, the lounge etc. I had a word with him, and he stopped for a week or so. Then back at it. The cheeky bastar...
