In Barratts newsagents earlier, I heard the guy behind the counter saying that the shop had been taken over. That might tie in with the decrease in the huge stock of newspapers that were there every weekend - I wonder if he'll keep the wide range of magazines they have at the moment.
By the standards of any British high street Waterstones is a quality retailer, by the appalling standard of Byres Road, infected with its ghastly little charity shops, they're bloody superstars! Independent bookshops in Britain are disappearing for a number of reasons, certainly competition from lar...
I see that Waterstones have a planning application in for a bookshop/cafe for the site at 351-355 Byres Road (the old Roots, Fruits and Mail Boxes shops). At last a bookshop back in Byres Road and a quality retailer. https://publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activ...
Just noticed on the council planning bulletin that Cafe Nero have planning permission in for the old Roots, Fruits shops at 351 - 355 Byres Road, pity, that would have made a great charity shop.
EWS stood for Emergency Water Supply and dates from the Second World War. During the war the various fire brigades were combined into a National Fire Service which meant that fireman could be sent to areas where they had no local knowledge. EWS, an arrow and an indication of distance would typically...

For a number of years Netowork Rail had on their 'wish list' a suggestion to move Hyndland stati...
Network Rail have a planning application in for lift towers and a footbridge at Hyndland station. The good folks of the West end should look at the hideous structure at Dalmuir and start their campaigns and petitions now.
There are iPhone apps that will use a photo to identify the font. It's no more a weirdo question than some others posted here and it's hardly a warm welcome to a new member.
This shop was the original Argyle Street branch of Woolies, later divided up and trading as Dixons/Currys/Tesco and Benny Hamish tailors upstairs. As I understand it, even though the shop hadn't traded as Woolies for years, their property division still owned it and when Woolies went bust their prop...
Surprised to hear D and F suggest mail order, I've always found them very happy to order for you. As for Harburn Hobbies, it's a good shop but expensive, you'll nearly always pay full retail price amd can save around £40 on the price of a loco by going to Hattons, Rails of Sheffield or The Signal Box.
According to the Allmeeja Scotland website, the SPT are looking for 'premium brand' businesses to run the Subway kiosks, including a new one at Partick. Presumably this means that the local traders who run Govan and Buchanan St at present will be out the door and that 'premium brand' means being rep...
